Communication in the field – That’s right
Especially if someone’s caught in the middle and the battle is tight.

Removing the uninvolved and clearing the sight until what is left are two opposing forces.
The referee is not supposed to be boxed in the boxing ring. He belongs to the neutral side—same with these hostages.

The battle was just between the two
Good ethics in the battlefield -- It worked and still works. The decision (to save the hostages) is an act of totally emptying oneself not minding any negative outcome or ‘ waterloo’ (Should the enemy refuse to agree on the proposal).
