I Never Expected

Once upon a time, there was this classmate of mine
Wh o called me by my nickname, Kokok. “Kokok, kokok , Si Digong (not yet president that time) …..
Pirmi sa amo balay, ala sais (6:00 a.m.) kada buntag, gapangayo tambag sa ako papa.”
I’m referring to Andang. She was our ever cutest classmate in Ateneo de Davao University.
Every time I went to their house in Dona Vicenta Village in Davao City, her family was offering me a fruitcake merienda. All smiles, of course. It’s cake with some wine content, so I always left their house with a full stomach.

It never came to my knowledge that someday, Andang’s father, lawyer Galicia (Galicia was Davao’s state prosecutor that time and Mayor Rody, the Assistant State Prosecutor) would later become my teacher in criminal law in Ateneo de Davao University law school. He (Galicia) somehow gently told me to make good with my grade.
(It was so hard for me to study and work at the same time. I was still adjusting to my first permanent job .).

It’s Andang who told me that the song I composed was her dad’s favorite –“Igatugyan Kong Tanan” (Click the blue link below to listen. It ‘s written and sung in vernacular).
(Inspite of the fact that my song was Andang’s dad’s favorite, it was not a guarantee for me to have a passing grade in my Criminial Law subject .). In short, I _____ .
Nonetheless, back to Mayor Rody, I never really expected that someday, this man whom Andang’s dad was advising would ever become President.

I saw Pres. Rody three times, once in Ateneo de Davao, during our junior year in AB Communication Arts when he was specially requested by our class to cut the ribbon for our advertising subject’s exhibit or fair.
Mayor Rody came to our exhibit . He cut the ribbon or graced the event. That time he was still thin or slim-looking but he appeared to be having full of energy. He wore his caravan- shaped eyeglasses. However, he did not stay long but my classmate and I were so delighted to see him.

I have good memories of those times , especially during our subject in adverstising . Our teacher was Mr. Enriquez. He told us, his students to think of three (3) things or products to advertise and that we should advertise them at the best we could. My best friend, Jude delos Reyes from Calinan (now the Fire Chief Inspector at Bureau of Fire Protection Office Central Office in Quezon City) had ‘David’s Foot Powder’ as his product. He told me the reason why…”Perhaps, King David, in his younger years, was fond of using sandals because if he wore shoes, his feet might turn out having a bad smell because he did not have any powder to protect his feet from sweating (which could produce a foul smell.).” My product to advertise that time was a perfume named “Sin and Shame’ and my slogan was…’You’ll never miss a day without having ‘Sin and Shame’. “ Sin and Shame perfume.
