“Sow the seeds.
Dig the Soil.
Plant the seedlings.”

Sir Rey:

In our meeting yesterday at the Copea room of the POPCOM Central Office, we were trying to think about a project that could be seen, something tangible.

As I passed by the adjacent lot of our office early this morning, the Sanctuary (DSWD Office) has good gardeners. In fact, their gardeners are good ‘urban planners’. They make use of their front lot, turning it into urban gardens, producing vegetables which are having economic value. Of course, these vegetables are good for the health, too. I think they are selling their produce.

I come up with this idea that we must have ‘Urban Garden (vertical or horizontal gardens) and we must ‘hire’ their services even for just 3 months using our Union Funds intended for this project.

First, we must buy vegetable seeds and fruit seeds. We should then give these seeds to the ‘gardeners’ after making a MOA with them, hiring their skills for just 3 months. That is, from September to October, 2018.

The gardeners , as part of the MOA or contract, have to dig the soil 2 weeks after they have placed or spread the seeds (okra, papaya, tomatoes, radish, etc..) on the seed boxes for them to grow so by the time these seedlings have 3 to 4 leaves they can be replanted and be placed in the garden soil or bed. (We can visit the gardeners’ garden if you want to but we must write them formally of our plan.).

In 2 weeks to a month’s time, these seedlings will be then transferred by the gardeners to the garden bed. After 2 months, we can then expect these vegetables to start flowering. For pechay (good to be planted in summer), it could be harvested in 2 to 3 weeks time, but preferably, a greenhouse must be prepared for this so sunlight can be controlled and this greenhouse will also prevent insects from attacking the pechay leaves.

The MOA with the gardeners will end on the 90th day, hoping that time, the transfer of gardening knowledge to the employees will also be through. I hope that this project will be sustainable making Mandaluyong City not only a ‘Zumba (Dance) City’ but also an ‘Urban Garden City’.
