Do No Harm
by Carlo G. Soldevilla
Written on May 30, 2018

It’s a line, a simple line but it may divide us (Philippines and China).
Call that line a boundary whether that line is found on the land or by the sea.

The Philippines can be like a red ant , warning the elephant (China) to bite its balls
If she’s (pestering) us, Filipinos.

But how can the ant bite its (elephant) balls when It’s not even able to climb on the elephant’s foot.

Like the U.S. , China had been a good ally to us.

Speaking of history, China did not short-change us.
She never colonized us or brought us to treaties or terms so hard for us to cope (with its provisions.).

China is superstitious and they know the value for money.
They live by the values of Sun Tsu, Lao Tzu and that of Confucious.

Digong, I must say, would never allow a past colonizer (U.S.). to tell the Filipino soldiers to fight against
China.
Digong knows our country’s history, and we, in Davao City know how Digong would run a city (and now, the whole country).

Observe a bisayan child simply playing the game of ‘bulan-bulan’
The water at night becomes the boundary of the soil..and stepping over it would mean ‘downfall’, disqualification, inability to follow the rules of the game that would lead the one (crossing the boundary) to be defeated (in the game).

“One’s right ends where the other person’s right begins.”-
A simple quote that calls for respect, to observe one’s limits that makes one cautious to do no harm.

U.S. is a friend. China is a friend.
But who do you think between the two is more friendlier?

It’s not even good to compare nations.
But we can always look back (as one may recall about his/her first love) to history..about what they did to us.

Lastly, stepping over the foot of another can sometimes never be avoided, affecting the other’s ingrown.
We may think China may have stepped over our foot. But this would also cause us to think and ask what U.S. did in time past. She (.U.S.) only did not step over us but ‘dwelt’ inside our being—a situation or a thing called ‘possession’. Remember the Bell Trade Act.

China can ask our permission to do fishing here. U.S. can also ask theirs.
“Just give the fish, not the fishpond.’ …Someone already ‘took’ our fishpond before. Again, remember the Bell Trade Act.

The red ant may be little compared to the elephant (U.S. or China)
But the red ant (Philippines) can always send signals to the elephant’s brain.

I hope the elephant can’t see the ant already starting to climb on its (elephant) foot.

Note: I don’t know if the best title of this poem would be ‘The Red Ant’ or ‘The Line That Divides Us’.
