Nurses still use the strap on persons with psychiatric issues, by consent and as a receiver of this treatment yes it hurts and does help. It is now given across thin shorts rather than bare but still hurts and corrects! 12 is the minimum, 36 the painful (very!) maximum usually it is between 12 and 24. sitting down is very uncomfortable for about 30 minutes, after which there is an ache in your bum for the rest of the day, you sleep on your tummy that night. It is important and necessary in my case and I am all the better for it. More details if anyone is interested.
