Patrick

Look, The Bill of Rights (not the one you mentioned, which was written by the Wright Brothers), guarantees the states to be free of Federal rule unless it is an issue pertaining to he Constituion itself. But I am not going to debate that issue.

What I want to say is that it really doesn't matter what color an emergency vehicle is displaying. You talk about NY and the fact that you see volunteer firemen sitting in traffic with no regard from the citizens to let them through.

On my first visit to NYC, I stepped out of the WTC and set foot on the streets of NY. My most vivid recollection of the city was standing on a street corner and watching an NYPD unit run code three. Well, I shouldn't say "run". He was sitting code three. And he sat there with his siren blaring for 30 minutes while not a single vehicle would move an inch to get try to let him through. I think I saw the officers take a nap, too.

There are times when emergency vehicles just can't get the public to move out of their way. We now live in a scoiety that believes "to each his own". In other words, there's no thought by anyone when they see an ambulance or fire truck running code that some poor soul needs their help. All the majority of people can think of is "too bad, I've got to get down to Bloomingdales (or wherever) for their big sale."

Generally, volunteer firemen are involved with FDs in smaller communities where the people are a little "kinder and gentler". You live in a town with 3000 people, everybody knows everybody and when you see John's Ford Bronco coming with the blue light on, you know he needs you to get out of the way. That's because the locals know what John is up to. But when John is working down in the Bronx and hears his toner go off and decides to run code all the way out to Podunk, 82 miles from work, he's not going to have much success regardless of whether he's running red, blue, green or purple.

And FYI, I am not sure about your mentioned "Ambulance lighting guidelines" but down here in Texas, Am,bulances run all colors of lights, including blue, amber and red.

I really do understand your point; however, I also agree with some who have replied. The public is not that stupid to be unable to identify an approaching emergency vehicle regardless of color. An EV is an EV. The problem is not color of lights, it's a problem where the motoring public just doesn't care. They have places to go and its a major inconvenience to have to switch lanes and get out of the way.

Dave: some years ago while in Tucson I was stopped while waiting for a light to change and heard an EV approaching. My stereo was OFF and the windows were up courtesy of my AC..........needless to say, I was looking around for a RED fire engine so that I could get out of its way........well, said apparatus finally appeared..........it was lime green and virtually invisible! The sunlight here is brilliant to say the least. (NT)Bearhawke in Az18:09:19 12/15/02 Sun
