(1)There are those who actually have older cars and show them or are restoring a car to show, or haven't yet found the right car. This group also includes active and retired law enforcement types with valuable memories of vehicles from past decades; this group also shows respect and good will toward fellow hobbyists (2)Then there are the know-it-alls who have never had a car or they are community college flunkys with late model wannabes and smart mouths. Or maybe it is even simpler then that: I seem to notice a clear age division-and you all know which group is which)
Guess who tends to dominate the discussion board? After meeting other hobbyists in person at shows, it is clearly the latter.
Doing the research, scrounging for the correct equipment, and restoring these cars is difficult enough. Not having a means to put a call out to everyone for information on a project would be terrible for this growing hobby. So now what? Limit the board to only those having an older car? Extreme, but that would leave out those who may be between projects or just have an interest in the cars.
How about changing the "discussion" board to "restoration" board and limiting the subjects to those which pertain to older vehicles only, say pre-1990. I mean, why would you "restore" a 1997 CVPI now, anyway? And subjects such as 2003 CVPI hubcaps- and any other banter for that matter- could only be posted to the talk anything board. Which brings up an interesting observation: it seems the "discussion board" has become the "talk anything" board. In fact, maybe Dave eliminates the "talk anything" altogether- you know, there ARE other places to talk about CVPI fires and law enforcement current events, but not many other places to discuss restorations and equipment.
I have been in this hobby 10 months now and would not have even attempted to get involved had I not found this website and discussion board and the leads/resources it provides. I now have (2) cars: one car I show and one other I am working on, so I'm hooked.
But what about other potential hobbyists? Should the board dissuade them from entering the hobby with the continued ill-will and disrespect?
I hope not.
