Alright, I have re-opened the board by popular demand.
Back in 1998, I hosted the National Police Collectors show in Denver. It took me an my co-host over a year to plan and put together. During that year, I gave up a lot of personal gain to accomplish this. I also put up with many people spreading rumors about the show and generally trying to sabotage it. For all my torubles, the show went off without a hitch. There were many, many people who told me we had put on the best organized show any of them had ever been to and they attend the national every year without fail.
A month later, the voice of the hobby, Police Collectors News came out with an 11 page article on the show. The first paragraph said what a great job we had done, what a well organized show it was. The remainder of the 11 pages were spent griping about the hotel rooms and the restaurant in the hotel. I stayed at the hotel (a Holiday Inn) myself and there was nothing wrong with the rooms. The hotel bent over backwards for these ungrateful people. The complaints about the restaurant stemmed from a sudden downpour that occurred as the show closed one night and over 1000 people stayed in the hotel/convention center and tried to be seated in the restaurant that seated only 80. So because of this, according to PC News, the show was a flop. "Let's hope we never have to go back to Denver", said the editor, Mike Bondareko.
After I had worked for over a year and my family worked non-stop for nothing for a week, I was offended. I left the hobby and have never put on another show because of this. I don't believe that by declaring "so and so did a good job" before you blast some other aspect of their work makes it all better.
And that's what I see here. The comments "Dave does great but this place sucks" are offenisve because this place is mine and I feel a responsiblity. So no matter how much icing you put on it, saying the board is not useful anymore because of what I and other moderators allow, I still feel the spit on my face.
My hope, when I started this place, was that it would be a community of regulars where we could socialize. I wanted to see car tips, know whats up for sale, find needed items but at the same time, be able to laugh. In the early days, I had many people say the first thing they did after their shift was come here and relax and laugh. We don't have that anymore. We have people who can't take a joke, can't roll with the punches, can't read something without getting highly offended and, in turn, nasty.
And yet, I do not want a place where all we talk about is how much air pressure is in a tire or whether its time to replace a green hose. All those things make the mix, they shouldn't monopolize the board.
I'll stick with my original statement see at the top of this page: If you wear your feelings on your sleeve, don't come in here. And if you expect this to be the place that only restoring cars will be discussed, forget it. We can talk about that all day long but I am not going to prohibit any other type of discussion.
Bottom line is, this board sucks. We have had some great people who were regulars here that have left and never come back. I have no idea why, though when this place was humorous, they were here posting every night, joining in the fun. Now, let's live wiuth this rule: the place is for information and FUN!
