The NYPD Museum has one of the last green, black and white 72 Plymouth Fury RMP's currently in storage to make room for a temporary exhibit. The 3 current old NYPD cars making the shows are a 71 Plymouth Fury, a 68 Fury and a 70 Plymouth Fury. There are plans for other cars. Over the years I have seen or heard about other cars but their current whereabouts or existance is unknown (at least to me). The 4 cars mentioned above were at the NYPD Museum show this past May. Pictures can be found in my album on Dave Arnold's Fotki photo page. The 3rd annual NYPD Museum show will most likely be held in June of 2003 again in lower Manhattan. The Museum limits the type of vehicles that can be displayed but any 1990 or earlier marked unit can participate this year. The nice thing about the Museum show is that it's a great opportunity to see and photograph the cars with the streets of New York as a backdrop which is quite interesting.
As for odd-ball cars used by the NYPD in regular service, they include- 1962 Ramblers and Studebakers; mid-sixties Chryslers; 1973 Chevrolets; 1976 Pontiac Venturas and Catalinas; full size Plymouths and Fords in the early eighties; and K-cars around 1980. I personally saw the Ramblers, Chryslers, Venturas, Catalinas, '80s Plymouth Furies and the K-cars. I saw pictures of the Studebakers, '80s Fords and the 73 Chevy. The Ramblers, Studebakers, and Venturas were in regular patrol use apparently to evaluate the use of compact cars for patrol service. The Highway (FKA Motorcycle) precinct cars often used larger, more powerful cars than the regular radio cars, hence the Chyslers, Catalinas and 80's Furies and square Fords. The fullsize 73 Chevy I cannot explain other than to say at least one existed in Staten Island in regular patrol service at a time when all the other cars were 73 Plymouth Furys, but the Chevy did exist, I saw published photos of it.
