- For vampires living in major metropolitan areas, there are many 'rules' that have to be followed to insure their survival and prevent exposure to the general public. The underground vampire society is set up in a certain way so as to keep the growing population a secret, and to keep them from getting out of balance with their food supply. Therefore, vampire Elders are put into positions to govern over all major areas where vampires are most concentrated. These rules are to be adhered to at ALL times. Failure to comply can result in immediate exile or worse...assassination. However, there are many 'cold zones' around the globe, where there is no Elder involvement whatsoever.
These areas are far from the bigger cities, usually maintaining a small nest of vampires here or there around the outskirts. Wooded areas, campgrounds, small towns, and the like, are big targets. In these 'cold zones', vampires are free to do pretty much whatever they want without fear of retaliation. No safeguard marks, no Elders, no hunters. It appeals to many rebellious vampires, looking to live their lives in darkness without the threat of being controlled or murdered for stepping out of line. Anyone entering a cold zone is fair game. Outside of Elder jurisdiction. And free to hunt and live and operate as they see fit.
But they are also removed from the benefits of Elder involvement as well. Sheltered habitats, food supply, and disposal of their 'slag', is now all their concern. If they're discovered...the townspeople will destroy the nest for sure.
'FINITE'
- The term 'finite' was coined some time around the 20th century. It is a negative term that vampires use to describe human beings. Refering mostly to their severely limited lifespan. Mostly used by vampires who feel superior to human beings, but are forced to deal with them in one open situation or another. For business or a level of diplomacy and balance between both worlds. They are not allowed to take any form of violent action against them or to feed upon these humans for any reason whatsoever, but the slight hostility remains. While the much more 'polite' term of saying 'daylight','daylights', or 'daywalkers', in reference to the humans that know about the vampire population is preferred...in darkness, the term 'finite' is often used as a slang or an insult to put them down. It's a prejudice to describe the living. One to be taken to heart.
This slur has been known to increase tension between both species, and it is often seen as a 'curse word' among vampires and humans alike.
GROWTH ENVY
- Since a vampire cannot grow, cannot gain or lose weight or muscle mass, or develop any further than the state they were in when they originally crossed over, no matter how many years ago...there is a psychological effect that many vampires affectionately refer to as 'Growth Envy'. It is especially rampant in vampires that were turned as children or teenagers. (A 'Halflife') It is a desperate longing to mature beyond their current state of being, and physically evolve. But due to the crossover process, and the lack of biological elements needed for them to 'age'...the vampire's appearance DOES not, and CANNOT, change ever again. So, unfortunately, they are left with a deep sense of unending regret, wondering what it would have been like to actually 'grow up' and have an adult male or female body. While it may cause depression and withdrawal in some vampires, it can be a very dangerous and despaiing condition for others who have found it difficult to deal with over the years. This disorder causes feelings of severe insecurity, jealousy, and occasional outbursts of anger or resentment. However, it has been known to express itself in other ways as well, such as intense sexual fetishes for older human partners, recurring vampire nightmares, repeated self mutilation, and reckless behavior.
This emotional problem is not ONLY reserved for halflife vampires. It can also affect older vampires who may have crossed over in a much older era. So vampires who were turned many many decades or centuries ago, may find themselves stuck with a contemporary look or style from their era that they cannot chage. Some crossed over with ailments or injuries that did not repair themselves as they were born into darkness. They cannot cut or re-style their hair, the cannot gain or lose strength no matter how hard they work, they cannot lose their virginity again, nor can they heal anything that was broken or imperfect before their rebirth. Therefore, this creates heavy feelings of loss and remorse in many vampires, and how they deal with it, depends on the vampire itself.
BLOOD MAJOR
- To vampires who hunt in packs, a 'Blood Major' is a reference to the amount of blood that each vampire gets from a single donor. The vampire who has a blood major is usually the hungriest, or the one who needs the blood refill the most. They can be given a majority of the donor's liquids in order to satisfy their thirst and prevent a future blood lust (which would be bad for the whole of the group). However, sometimes a blood major is taken by the strongest and perhaps 'greediest' of the bunch. When two or more vampires draw blood from the same body, this drain can be felt...as the blood supply seems to be sucked out rather violently in a different direction.
Some pack hunter vampires work to provide an equal share for all involved. Others fight for their sustenance like angry hyenas, adopting more of a 'first come, first serve' attitude and taking all the blood they can get before the donor is drained dry.
Pack hunting is always done in unison. Always at the same time. And everyone either gets what they can during the huint, or they have to do without until the pack is ready to hunt again. So a blood major is an important part of the pack hunter mentality. One that has to be learned qickly, before starvation becomes a serious problem for the less agressive vampires in the group.
