Subject: Pioneer Quest now listed

Pioneer Quest is now listed on the pbs.org page as being on tonight at 7 p.m. I don't know if that's for everyone or not, but it is listed there.

then no one ain't happy, was the theme of last night's show, lol. The new couple arrived. They are older (late 40's) than the couple that was already there (late 20's). Wish I remembered names. Younger couple thought at first older couple wouldn't last. They were skeptical when Mr. Older wanted to build an outdoor kitchen with shelves and a tarp roof for his wife, because "if Mama ain't happy," etc.)
and Mrs. Older had brought doilies and was concerned about getting organized and clearing brush. Mrs. Younger thought there was too much to do to worry about clearing brush, Mr. Younger thought a corral took priority over a kitchen. So Mr. Older built the shelves, Mrs. Older cleared brush and started organizing the kitchen (including a stove they'd brought), Mr. & Mrs. Younger built the corral. By the end of the day, Mrs. Younger could see that while Mrs. Older was not thrilled to be there (was doing it for her husband) Mrs. Older was a hard and willing worker and her organization skills paid off. The kitchen was in "working order" by the end of the day and you could see both couples enjoyed having a kitchen in which to cook and eat. Having the corral built got the animals under control, so that was a definite benefit too.
Plowing was extremely difficult, but went better when the 2 men could do it. When mr. & Mrs. Younger tried, she could hardly keep the plow down hard enough to break the soil, but she couldn't get the horses to do anything while her husband could.
Mrs. Younger talked about how at home she would expect her husband to help with cooking etc., but could see how the traditional roles were necessary back then as she simply didn't have the strength to do the men's work, though she had tried. Mrs. Older was more comfortable in the traditional role, as that was what she did at home anyway.
In this show the two couples are currently sharing ONE tent until they can build homesteads (at least I think the plan is for 2).
It has been raining record amounts, so they had to plant twice as original planting rotted, their clothes and other material items are getting moldy, bathing is almost non-existent. But, though at times, they seem a bit discouraged, especially by the weather, they all seem determined to make it work. As in Frontier House they are discovering that the men get to do the more fulfulling work that shows results, while the women have to do the grinding, repetitive work that shows no results because it just all has to be done over again the next day (cook, wash dishes, etc).
Mr. Older has a lot of enery and enthusiasm and is the only one who has not looked discouraged for even 1 second (he does have some farming and carpentry skills to begin with), but, as I said, they are all essentially upbeat and determined.

Hi Ann,

thanks for all that info. The show sounds really good and after reading your description of the unfolding events, I wish we were getting it over here in Perth, but fat chance of that happening here, LOL!

Keep us informed if you catch the next upcoming episodes.

Hi, Anne! I'll try to watch the show every week and post a summary after.
I read on a writers list I'm on that there was a show once where a family spent time living in the conditions of the iron age. I'm not sure exactly when that was, but it must have been pretty long ago and the conditions must have been pretty rough! What's next? The Prehistoric House (Cave)!!!

I am surprised at the way the people on both Frontier House and Pioneer Quest are surprised at how hard it was to live back then. Even though I didn't think of all the obstacles they wind up facing, I easily pictured that it would be much, much, much too hard for me, LOL!
