Subject: Pioneer Quest, week 3

It rained more in four hours than it ususally does in a month, so the pioneers were really soaked. They were still in the tent and everything was getting wet. So they decided they'd better get going on the houses and built the first one, for the younger couple, since they'd been there the longest. It's 10 x 12, has a window and door, but no fireplace or stove, so I'm wondering how they are going to keep warm in the winter. Maybe they'll add a stove later, but there was no mention of it. They'd have to cook in the outdoor kitchen all winter if they don't get a stove inside, and that seems really impractical. Guess we'll see.

They built the bed platform high enough to store stuff under it, and built shelves and boxes for other stuff. The couple was SO happy to have their litte home and be out of the rain! It was interesting, because they built the walls with the logs lined up vertically instead of horizontally, an idea they got from a photo of an old log cabin.
The younger husband shaved the legs of his wife with a straight-edge razor! I guess the tools were from the time, but I bet pioneer women didn't shave their legs.

Hi Ann,

your post about the events of week 3 make me realise more and more how I couldn't participate in a show like that, or live in that era! However, it is extremely interesting to see how others fare, isn't it!

I had never before heard of the logs lined up vertically rather than horizontally! Very interesting.

That was sweet of the younger husband, in regards to the shaving of the legs. I have often wondered what pioneer women did about excess body hair, and have always assumed they did nothing at all.

Please keep us posted on how the two couples are going. I wish we got it over here in Perth :-(
