Subject: It's dissertation time again...

I've got to decided in the next two weeks what I'm doing for my Women's Studies MA dissertation. I think I'm going to do something on the significance of fashion and dress amongst nineteenth century pioneer/ frontier women - that way I get to bring in some LIW too. Do any of you know of any books/ articles about frontier fashion? I know there's stuff about it in general texts on pioneer women (but usually only a couple of pages), but I'd like something more in depth. I'vegot no idea whether or not my topic will be accepted, as I haven't discussed it with my supervisor, but everyone else I've mentioned it to has been very positive.

I like the idea. I haven't any resources to tell you of, but DO wish you luck. Let us know how it goes.

I don't know of any resources either, but maybe you'd find something on powells.com or amazon.com? Also, an internet search for books or musuems on the subject?
This is a bit off this subject, but wasn't someone here looking for a book about a real frontier person? I saw this on powells.com:
The Adventures of the Woman Homesteader: The Life and Letters of Elinore Pruitt Stewart by Susanne Stewart
I haven't read it and don't know anything about it, but is *sounds* interesting.

The Pruitt Stewart book is good.

I think the reason I haven't found any in-depth studies of frontier fashion is because there aren't any. I've tried Amazon and Alibris, and they have stuff on nineteenth-century fashion (e.g. the corset), and on fashion and costume today, but nothing that specific. Good! Looks like I've found myself an original topic then.

Good luck with your dissertation, Laura! Please let us know if you find anything you think we'd find of particular interest.
