The report attempts to play devil's advocate, but the overall theme does not feel positive. My first thought about Balakian - and others - is that no one is forcing them to stay, but maybe their fondness for Colgate is exactly why they were so vocal to being with. Perhaps the article should have interviewed athletes themselves and heard what they had to say. A 50+ year old arena is not obsolete and yes, 38 million is a lot of money, but so many schools have spent so much more. Colgate is not alone.

What did Bourger Varsity Football House cost Lafayette, alumni or not?

Or TD Bank Sports Center Arena at Quinnipiac?

The next Bloomberg article will probably be Colgate's wasteful spending on athletic scholarships.

I just found it humorous that they queried a Smith College economist on the issue. Does Smith have s rich sports tradition? Also no discussion of the soon to be built fine arts campus downtown. What about Bowdin's new hockey arena a few years ago or the remodel of the Yale whale. It also serves 3 sports lax and soccer too so the glitz clearly is designed to draw many types of kids to the Gate who as Murray said we couldn't get before. Net/net perhaps a more diverse school notwithstanding no guarantee of success on the ice or field...

The Smith commentary was no doubt set up by the Colgate faculty up to thir old tricks. Very sneaky.

Let me get this straight - Colgate, with a Div 1 hockey program and 900 million endowment, carries out a decades overdue replacement of an eyesore over a half century old, and this is considered an example of the overemphasis of sports on college campuses today, warranting a Bloomberg News profile??? For those of us who know Colgate athletics and what has transpired in the last generation, this report borders on parody! We don't even fund the full compliment of hockey scholarships for cryin' out loud, the only team in the NCAA playoffs a couple of years ago not to do so. We apply the AI for hockey recruits when we don't have to. The shame of it is that even with these disadvantages we were on the cusp of becoming a national elite hockey program recently. Balakian and his ilk would cut off their genitals to be on the Yale or Princeton faculty. They should take a road trip to see the hockey facilities these schools have for their students. This report is further evidence of the ongoing problem faced by Colgate athletics, a problem many even on this board deny exists. I hope our new president, with his athletic background at a school which used athletics to improve its academic profile, will tell these clowns he'd put in a good word for them if they wish to join the Hamilton or Swarthmore faculty.

You hit a home run with that response of yours! I especially like the idea of a trip to Princeton and Yale for these disgruntled and aimless individuals on the faculty.

Go 'gate!

These faculty CINOs (Colgate in name only) already self-identify as Yale/Princeton/Ivy/D-III.

Who you kidding, the entire campus strives for that. That is why we are getting passed by the very institutions that we used to beat.
