Subject: Fordham game

What do posters project for Saturday's big game with the Rams? Could this be the game that upsets the PL assumptions that Fordham be declared champions due to their advance billing? Could an upset rearrange the geography of the PL? Or will the Rams find the Kerrdome to their liking and deliver a whooping? Your comments....

Fordham's tilt with Lehigh shows that they are vulnerable, but FU has to be favored. I always think that for Colgate is boils down to the offensive line. Can we develope a running game. Timely pass completions do help open the field. The Fordham defense looks like their weakness.
That said their TB Edmunds is the best back in the PL since Eachus.

hopefully gate runs a ball control offense to use the clock and keep the FU offense off the field and the gate D can make a few stops, if not....long day in Hamilton!!!
a shoot out will not go the raiders way

FCS website has it listed as a %100 chance of Fordham winning. They are #11 nationally, Edmunds first in rushing with 1400 yards. Yikes

Colgate can win, but they have to have a very good game. They will be able to run and eat clock, if Melville can keep FU's defense honest with connects to his very good receivers when necessary. As Biddle once said, we are going to run the ball until they stop us, then we'll pass. The real challenge will be for Colgate's defense. Obviously, they have to control Edmonds. Keep him to around 120 yards should do it. Home game, must win, family weekend, decent weather, long home absence, rested team is a perfect recipe for winning. We have seen Colgate prevail in games like this many times. It is Colgate football at its best. Go 'gate!

Colgate | Fordham [who looks better]

Offense for Wins: 25 | 46 [FU]
Defense for Wins: 16 | 32 [CU]

Offense for Loses: 17 | 7 [CU]
Defense for Loses: 32 | 14 [FU]

Prediction (based on optimism and heart): 31-28 Colgate.

We win as:

Hunt and co. make smart play calls that eat up ToP, move the ball into the redzone on 80+% of possessions, and score from the red zone on 75+% of possessions.

2:1 turnover differential in Colgate's favor.

Nothing stupid happens on special teams + we hit field goals when needed.

(I'm afraid to mention 4th down choices and execution...)

From my perspective, this game is the barometer by which this season is measured.

LET'S GO GATE!!!!

My coffee-fueled optimism wasn't too far off ;-).

Correct about the kicking game. Field goals could be the difference. Use Bowman when in his range. He's back on track.

At least as of the end of the first quarters, the Raiders are surprisingly ahead, 14-3. Let's hope they keep it up!

That last drive of Fordham's was 15 plays, 58 yards, 8:09 and ZERO points due to a blocked field goal.

Really looking possible today. Need to score on this drive and a STRONG second half.

Liking the bend-but-not breaking Colgate defense!

It's halftime and the all of the smiles at Andy Kerr are wide- apart from over on the visitor stands. Ha!

Let's savor this moment and recall it come hell or high water for the rest of the season!

This is truly and obviously what these guys practice all year for. Great execution by the team and their resourceful and smart coaches!

Go 'gate!

Well, that was an ending with a lot of tricks ... and a "treat" for the fans!

I was throwing flurries and jumping around my office like a real idiot after that last play.

Fordham rushes for 54 yards on 33 carries the week after Edmonds goes for 347.

Big game for 48!

Great new wrinkles on offense to start the game.

Keep it going 'gate!!!

Thank God we won because we played very well...we still have to learn how to finish games, but I loved the aggressive play calling, the intensity of the defense and the overall effort...stay aggressive offensively because we have the weapons and Melville is capable of using all of them...

Amazing game and cardiac ending. Kept the Rams running game in check, particularly Edmonds; the defense played great, except for some long passes we just never could stop. One bugaboo I noticed from sitting high in the Dunlap stands was our lack of good tackling...still. Need to continue to improve on that and learn not to arm tackle....we're not going to take guys down with that type of tackling, granted the Firdham players were fast, big, and mostly scholarship grade.

Noticeable was the spirit of the team and the energy - a complete improvement spiritually by everyone on the sidelines to support the team. The energy and enthusiasm rubbed off on the O and D, and you could feel the mojo was with Gate all game.....even during those last few seconds...and when the two- point conversion was batted away all that pent up enthusiasm exploded, and rightfully so. It's great to see the players get the result showing they can play with anyone in the PL. This is the signature win of the year IMO.

I hope these guys keep that energy. It was great to see them play so hard and fight to the end--haven't seen the team that excited for a game since the 2012 Lehigh game. If they keep bringing that kind of energy week after week, they will keep playing--pretty good incentive.

Top five tackers on D were linebackers and D-line. Not sure when the last time that happened was but that's a really good sign.

Agree on the staying aggressive on O--though there were certainly a lot more passes in the 4th than usual. Probably the fewest read option plays in the past five years and the offense was better for it. 25, 29. 80, 3 and a bunch of other guys can make plays. Keep 15 on the attack mode and keep winning!!!

The Future is 100% correct. Good analysis. Keep Jake aggressive and the team has to keep that aggressive mind set!

Great comment. Defense has really improved and the ground game is key to open things up for Melville!

Who knew the field goal with seconds to go in the second quarter, after the Rams scored, would be so important? Incredible!

[> Re: Fordham game -- Gate'83, 10/31/15 6:34:58pm Sat

Just back from the game...

We dominated Fordham all day. They have some great offensive weapons, but nothing else. I was really surprised at how weak they were on D and specials.

We have to figure out how to close. Like our other wins this should have been easy... and by the end I thought I was going to puke if we were going to overtime.

Let's not get so conservative with a lead. We had chances early in the 2nd to turn this into a blowout and were way too conservative. Maybe a young coach learning on the job?

Time to put the hammer down. No reason we shouldn't win the rest of our games & build momentum behind the program for both the playoffs this year and for our teams into the future.

Couldn't be happier! Held on by the fingernails & now down to Rusch's for the Met game. Does it get any better than that?

Let's Go Gate!!!

Thrilling game, flawless 1st half. So proud of the coaches and team. The enthusiasm from the sidelines - even before kickoff - was contagious. The fans were pretty incredible and most of them actually stayed!

And then the 2nd half happened.

Winning the coin toss means scoring on the first possession of the 3rd is significant. Fordham knew what it had to do after the half, and they made us punt. The tide had turned and their sidelines showed it. Missing 4th-and-1, a facemask penalty, a fumble, limited pass defense...a game of two halves to be sure but the Resilient Raiders somehow prevailed.

The season could very well come down to the Lehigh game on Nov. 14th. A loss would create a 3-way tie for first, and the tiebreaking procedures may force a league committee decision. Fordham and CU do not have any common OOC opponents; Lehigh and 'Gate both lost to Y&P.

Hope that Pujals/Holy Cross can get a win over the Mountain Hawks next weekend in Bethlehem...but most important, that we take care of business!
