Subject: Fall Sports Reality

Does anyone care to discuss the start of the fall sports season, or are we going to concentrate our worries about where Colgate ranks in whatever news & word report?

As of today men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, football and field hockey are a combined total...

4-17 (and 1 tie)

Lone bright spot is the start men's soccer has had.

Can't wait for this to be spun into some other topic of conversation.

Guess we hold out hope for winter sports (men's ice hockey) to get us closer to the black.

Roll camera.

Yeah, I'm sure you're on the edge of your seat for every field hockey game. Get a life.

Agreed, Gate '83. Lonely Ranger is just stirring the pot and looking for conversation, I suspect.

"Stirring the pot" & "Get a life." Excuse me folks, if I may, but the numbers don't lie. Seems to me the poster was simply stating a fact, which they are allowed to do. They obviously struck never.

Not surprising since the early part of most seasons is when we play our stretch games. Five of those combined losses were to nationally ranked schools in their respective sports. Other losses were to so-called "big time" athletic schools Pitt, BC, St Johns, Rutgers.

Okay, field hockey is not at the top of most watched contests and, I guess, we need the team for Title IX balance but, what the hey! The coach is in her 26 year and has had only 3 winning seasons. The last one was 2004. Her win percentage is .385. The other three coaches that Colgate has had all had records above .500. Can't help thinking Colgate can attract good players, so, is the coach performing to expectations? Is there a shortage of field hockey coaches? Is the present coach just a wealthy eccentric and funds the program out of her pocket?

Clearly she either has "pictures" or Tenure. You would think that pride alone would influence held to give up the job.

It starts with the administration, expectations have to to be set and met. Also, some of the student athletes are on scholarship, so expectations should be there as well. Seeing the AD is early in their tenure and hasn't been in a situation to actually let someone go, it will be interesting if the trigger is ever pulled. I imagine it is a lot different doing the firing instead of being one office over and having an opinion when the previous AD was there.

I imagine it would be hard to make those decisions when clearly there are personal relationships that would go in account, especially for those that a long tenure.

But business is business and it shouldn't matter. We all have jobs to do, simple as that.

Like everyone else, I am disappointed with all these losses. That said, last year the program was in a similar state and yet they did well enough over time and qualified for the PL tournament. That's a standard that everyone can strive for as the season progresses.

Go 'gate!

I'm smiling and appreciate you effort to put a positive spin on the record but, sorry, making the PL tournament should be the minimum goal and that doesn't happen nearly often enough. The coach's record can not be defended especially, if there are scholarships. Colgate has lots of positions in the athletic department. If relationships cause a reluctance to make a change, perhaps a move to another suitable position in athletics could be arranged. However, it appears no one really cares so the beat will go one.

AD seems reluctant to fire anybody.
