Subject: Best of Shiloh

I know every man and woman who went to Shiloh has his own favorite memory, so here is mine: On Saturday our brigade was among the first Rebs on the field. We were slowly marching out in our long brigade battle line. Company K was the very end company of the whole Reb army moving forward. As battalion adjutant I was on the extreme right end of the battalion, so there were NO troops to my right. Then I noticed a little line of "baby ducks" marchng out behind us veering off to our right to deploy there. They weren't really baby ducks, but were 6 or 8 teenage horseless cavalry, without an officer, headed out to "skirmish". Then a mounted staff officer from King's Division HQ staff rode over and politely and firmly told them they couldn't just walk out and deploy where ever they wanted on the field. They needed orders. The leader of the youngsters protested and the mounted officer told him bluntly that we will lead the little group directly to General Way, the overall Reb commander, for him to decide if or where they should deploy. The little ducks then followed him off the field. I don't know what happened to them after they left our right flank. But bless that staff officer. We need more of that sort of self-policing.

Then our advance started and off we went forward further and futher until we pushed the blue boys all the way back to end of the world back in the woods where they finally gave up. It was a grand afternoon.
