State News Tram driver caught 'reading' on job

Jul 18, 2012 9:28pm

UPDATE: A YARRA Trams driver filmed allegedly reading a catalogue while driving a tram is under investigation.

A YouTube user uploaded the video yesterday and posted the following note:

''I endured this disturbing ride on the 109 tram from Stop 57 to Stop 55 tonight.

''I am wondering just how unlawful this driver's behaviour is? Care to answer, Yarra Trams?''

The 109 tram runs between Box Hill and Port Melbourne, travelling through the city.

Commuter Rod Swift, who filmed the incident and posted the video on YouTube, said the incident went on for at least two minutes as the tram was driven along Whitehouse Rd.

Swift said the driver was reading an electronics catalogue at the time.

''I felt unsafe in that tram - I thought the situation was dangerous,'' Swift said.

''It got more disturbing as he rejoined traffic.''

The passenger didn't approach the driver, fearing he would distract him further.

''It would have been unlawful for me to approach a tram driver while he was driving - it would be distraction, oh the irony.''

Swift left the tram shortly after because he felt unsafe.

''I got off straight away and thought I'm going to grab a train… I can't go on this tram any further and it's way to dangerous.''

Swift said police should be called in to investigate the incident.

''There needs to be an investigation into the driver and his behaviour.

''Victoria Police needs to investigate whether it was careless, dangerous driving or not controlling a vehicle correctly.

''I mean a tram driver should abide by the road rules.''

Swift reported the driver to Public Transport Victoria last night.

Public Transport Users Association president Daniel Bowen said: "It doesn't seem to be a widespread problem, but clearly Yarra Trams must investigate and take appropriate action. Public transport has a rightful reputation as a very safe mode of travel, and this must not be jeopardised.''

A Yarra Trams spokesman said the case will be dealt with in accordance with the company’s disciplinary process.

“Safety is the number one priority of Yarra Trams in operating Melbourne’s tram network,” he said.

“Tram drivers are well aware of the rules relating to safety and we investigate all incidents that come to our attention.

“Yarra Trams has launched an immediate investigation and will interview the tram driver as soon as he reports for duty.”

He added that when the customer called the tram company’s customer feedback line, he reported a different tram number to that shown in the video.
