London 2012
Posted Jul 13th, 2012 • Category: Big Issue Magazine, Current Issue • By Elise Moore
After controversies and a stuff-up or two, the 2012 London Olympics are looming. The Games are now too big, too costly and not what they were meant to be. Yet when they begin, we will still be watching. Alan Attwood ponders the enduring appeal of the Olympic spectacle.
Also in this issue:

Matt Shea chats to Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli ahead of the band’s whistle-stop Australian tour; Tim Kroenert discusses blood feuds in rural Albania with The Forgiveness of Blood director, Joshua Marston; Tim McGuire explains how Brisbane author Nick Earls has hit another home run with his new collection of short stories; and, in ‘Roving Eye’, we visit Timor-Leste 10 years after independence.

This edition’s ‘Vendor Profile’ is Nicole from Geelong, and we have ‘Streetsheet’ contributions from Owen in Melbourne, Cindy in Adelaide, Marc in Canberra, Gary T in Brisbane, Sarah in Perth, and Michelle and Glenn in Sydney. We also present a great photo of Cheryl, Kellie and Cherryl – from the Big Issue’s Women’s Subscription Enterprise – posing with some fancy certificates. The trio were among 21 women who completed Certificate III in Business last month as part of a training and mentoring program involving Juno Consulting and senior female staff from the National Australia Bank (NAB).
