Hi Bobby! My husband and I are looking forward to seeing you tonight. It's been a LONG time. Too long. However, Harte's is within crawling distance of my house, so it is a moral imperative that I attend!

Anyhow, maybe I'm stupid, but is this David Gans the same guy who does the Grateful Dead Radio Hour? Thanks and see you tonight!

Hey Bobby,
Rause here. I know it's a little overdue but I just found out. So sorry to hear Harry passed away. I wanted you to know that he was a great influence and inspiration in my life. Especially after meeting him so soon after my own father passed. I hope you are doing O.K. It's kind of coincidental, my father died on Jan 3. 1974. one day and 33 years apart. Be strong.

Hey Bob-

Are you in the biz of amp repair/overhaul/hotrodding? Got a 64 Fender Bandmaster head that I think needs a couple screws tightened here and there. But I'm also curious about customizing etc.

Anyway, if the answer to the above is 'no', do you have any recommendations of Chicago joints that are in that line?

Thanks for any help.

Relix NEWS
Vince Welnick: 1951-2006

Former Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick died of unknown causes on June 2, 2006. He was 55. Welnick, who played keyboards in the Grateful Dead from 1990 through 1995, cut his teeth performing in the California shock-rock band the Tubes in the 1970s. During his tenure with the Grateful Dead, Welnick contributed a number of original songs to the group's canon, most notably "Samba in the Rain." Bruce Hornsby helped usher Welnick into the Dead, playing piano by his side through 1991. While Welnick did not participate in any of the Dead's studio sessions, his work can be heard on both the experimental live albums Infrared Roses (1991) and Grayfolded: Transitive Axis , as well as a handful of Dick's Picks releases. Following the passing of Jerry Garcia, Welnick urged the group to continue on, though his bandmates ultimately decided to retire the Grateful Dead name. While Welnick did not participate in tours under the Others Ones or Dead monikers, he did perform in both RatDog and the Mickey Hart Band. He also formed his own group, the Missing Man Formation, which featured Steve Kimock (guitar), Bobby Vega (bass) and the Tubes' Prairie Prince (drums). More recently, Welnick clocked in time with Dead-inspired outfits Gent Treadly and Jack Straw. He is the fourth Grateful Dead keyboardist to pass, following Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Keith Godchaux and Brent Mydland.
Welnick was not without his demons. In 2003, the keyboardist told Relix magazine, "I tried to off myself in the RatDog bus in '95, right before Christmas, right after The Dead died. I pretty much hit bottom there and I'm sure that hasn't helped my popularity with Bobby. I think that shook him up so much, and the other members of the band so much, that it contributed to why I am no longer being called to participate." But Welnick did avoid certain trappings: "I coughed a pretty good attitude [laughs], but I didn't get into heroin," Welnick says. "I never used needles, never used freebase and that kind of stuff. I drew that line as a kid. No needles, no freebase, no heroin and never broke that promise to myself."

Welnick, who was set to play a number of festivals and solo dates this summer, leaves behind a wife, Lorie.

Ex-Manager Pleads Guilty in R.I. Deaths

By ERIC TUCKER
Associated Press Writer
Published February 7, 2006, 5:21 PM CST

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The former tour manager for the heavy metal rock group Great White pleaded guilty to 100 counts

of involuntary manslaughter Tuesday for setting off the pyrotechnics that caused one of the deadliest nightclub fires in

U.S. history.

Under a plea bargain, Daniel Biechele, 29, will serve no more than 10 years in prison.

The Feb. 20, 2003, blaze killed 100 people and injured more than 200 others. It was the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire in

U.S. history.

Biechele set off a flashy pyrotechnics display during a concert at the West Warwick club called the Station. The sparks

ignited flammable soundproofing foam inside the club, fueling a fast-moving fire that quickly enveloped the one-story

wooden building and trapped concertgoers.

Biechele pleaded guilty to 100 counts that accused him of lighting the pyrotechnics without the required permit, resulting in

the deaths. An additional 100 counts will be dismissed, sparing Biechele what could have been many more years behind bars.

Sentencing was scheduled for May 8.

Some relatives of those killed in the fire have criticized the plea agreement, saying they wanted Biechele to stand trial.

Dozens attended Tuesday's hearing, and many met with Attorney General Patrick Lynch afterward.

"With the defendant's guilty plea, we will avoid a lengthy trial and ensuing appeals that could stretch on for years," Lynch

said.

During the hearing, several women dabbed their eyes with tissues, and one woman held up a small photograph of her

daughter, who was killed in the blaze.

The brothers who owned the nightclub, Jeffrey and Michael Derderian, were also indicted in 2003 on charges of

involuntary manslaughter. They were accused of installing the foam and have pleaded not guilty.

Biechele's lawyer has maintained that he had permission to use the pyrotechnics, and on Tuesday, prosecutors said Biechele

received permission from Michael Derderian to use them. The Derderians have insisted in the past that they never gave him

permission.

The attorney general said Biechele could testify against the Derderians if they go to trial.

Put the guy in prison for being incredibly ignorant? Might as well put away most of us in rock ‘n roll…

All is well here in Iraq. It doesn't feel at all like Christmas, so nobody is too sad or moody. My roommate and I have a little Christmas tree in our room from her mother-in-law, and we have a few presents underneath it. My Christmas Eve will be a typical evening for me. I am working today so I'll be on call tonight. If I can get a spare radio, I'll go see Chronicles of Narnia, and if I can't get a radio I'll wait to see it tomorrow.

Last night I provided medical support for the Sergeant Major of the Army Hope and Freedom Tour. Al Franken was there, and some country acts - Mark Wills, Craig Nelson (a former soldier), and Keni Thomas (another former soldier - he was in the debacle that was made into Blackhawk Down). There was also an Army band - but not like a marching band. People playing guitars and drums, but they did all different kinds of music - rap, hip hop, rock. It really was not the best ever USO show I've seen, but it wasn't too bad. The only medical support we provided was giving some Motrin to a guy with a headache, so that's pretty good. I took a picture with Mark Wills and Craig Nelson after the show and got their autographs (I don't know why I did that, like I care?). But anyway, it was alright and it's nice that they did that for the soldiers here. Al Franken was funny but obviously sensored. The only thing that ticked me off about him is he was making fun of Uday Hussein and I don't really think it's appropriate to make fun of the deceased the way he was.

I guess that's about it. I have seen one patient today, but it's only 10:25 so I guess there will be a couple more eventually.

Love and hugs and kisses to you all. I'll talk to you soon!

Love,
Spuds

Hi Bob!!

I aquired an American standard strat about 4 months ago, and I hated the bridge pickup, so I took out the tone pot and threw in a tap-able single coil size humbucker into that slot; it's a lil' 59, made by seymour duncan. Now my issue is that when both coils are running in the bridge my "two spot" on the 5 way is making noise, where before there was none, but when I tap it the "two spot" is quiet. Was there an error in my wiring, or is this normal for this schematic? Do you need more info to make an assement?

Oh one more thing, I picked up a two way toggle to run series/parrallel, except I don't really know what that does, for a technical standpoint. It seems to give a boost in volume/balls, and I know i liked the effect it has on some of these custom guitars (robin, neworleans etc), but again just a little unsure what it really does,

just pickin your brain. thanks!!

Happy Thanksgiving! It's not too awful here in Iraq. Business is slow at the clinic - most people are off and nobody wants to see the doc on a day off!! For lunch I had turkey, ham, rib roast, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, and salad, with hot sweet potato pie and vanilla ice cream for dessert. It was supposed to be pumpkin but apparently SGT Fisher didn't know the difference when he grabbed it :-) The food was pretty decent. For dinner I'll probably have the same except no rib roast and I'll have mashed potatoes and stuffing, and I'll be sure to grab the pumpkin pie. They decorated the dining facility all festive-like, ribbons and streamers and huge cakes and fruits... I took pictures. So they're trying to make it nice for us. It ain't too bad, but it sure ain't home.

We also have hand-turkeys all over the walls from hundreds of kids at some grade shcool back home. One of our soldier's mom works at the school so they sent us Thanksgiving turkeys. It's really cute. I took pictures of that too.

Love you all very much, and I miss you!

“A man using his young daughter as a shield fired more than 40 rounds at neighbors and police before he was cut down by officers in an incident in which the child also died”, Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton said Monday afternoon.

Let’s lose the PR talk and word that for what it was, Chief… “A man using his young daughter as a shield fired more than 40 rounds at neighbors and police before he and the toddler were cut down by officers…”

When they take the job, cops make their ‘Deal with the Devil’. They receive a relatively cushy job, the drive as fast as they want as drunk as they want and generally make up their own rules. In other words, the job has a lot of perks from a particular viewpoint. There is only one price: Every now and then one is called on to risk his life… or even surrender it for the public good.

Even though I don’t have all of the facts (as the Los Angeles Police Department’s PR department is surely working overtime to insure that we get their sugar-coated version), from what I’ve read I think that what went on in LA is completely disgraceful. They blew away a 17-month-old little girl to get at the maniac using her as a shield because he had wounded one of their own. Sounds like real street-gang type stuff to me.

SWAT guys were all over this guy and nobody could get a clear shot at an ankle? Once down, if he doesn’t quit, catch him in his thighs (a toddler can only cover so much of the body). There’s arteries in them there thighs… Not good enough you say?

How ‘bout ten of you big burly ‘tough-guy’ types with your bullet-proof vests getting’ out from hiddin’ behind your car doors and chargin’ señor Peña ‘till he’s empty? How much ammo did he have left in his HANDGUN anyway? How many cops would he have killed? One? Two? Certainly no more and, most probably, none at all (head shots are tough when you gotta think fast)… It really bugs me that, out of all of those cops on the scene, there weren’t a few that thought saving a toddler’s life was a pretty good way to go out. It speaks volumes for the society we now live in…

Let's see... 66 days remaining... Can't wait to get the bejeezus outta here! HOPEFULLY I'll get to leave in 66 days. Turns out I have a slight tear in my left rotator cuff. It's not even an Army thing; it's most likely from when I fell ice skating a couple of years ago and thought I broke my scapula. The x-rays I had taken here (by a classmate, of course!) show no signs of a previous injury, so it probably was never broken. However, this rotator pain has been hurting on and off since the incident, so it's probably from the fall. Anyhoo, I'll see a physical therapist next week or the following and find out what they'll do about it. If it's surgery I might not get to leave here on time. But I doubt it'll come to surgery so I'm not going to worry about leaving.

Otherwise, training is progressing well. I am working second shift this week (3:00pm-11:30pm) and it kind of sucks. The civilian techs who work this shift are a couple of really great guys. James and Bill are both former Army, Viet Nam vets. They became x-ray techs recently, like in the past few years. James is in the process of refurbishing a '61 VW Bus. Bill is a guitar player, bluesy. I haven't been able to check him out yet. There's another guy, don't know his name, who works seconds also, but he called in sick today. Sounds like a case of the mondays to me...

I am very tired and have to get up at 5:15am tomorrow, so I won't get to sleep too much. But I suppose I can go back to bed after formation is over, around 8:00. Yikes. Too much BS here. But, on the bright side, they are letting me work 1st shift Thursday so I can go to the Velvet Revolver concert Thursday night. :-)

I suppose that is all. I miss everyone very much . Sophia is growing so big! And Scarlet is adorable. I can't wait to meet her!

Love and kisses,
Spuds

PEACE BE WITH YOU, SCOTT
Our bandmate, our brother, our friend

Dark Star Orchestra keyboardist and co-founder Scott Larned passed away of heart failure Sunday afternoon. This is a quite sudden shock for all of us and will take some time for us to process.

Scott was a leader, co-founder and, for years, the band's manager helping guide this thing through some tricky waters in the early goings. His swirling hammond organ and glassy piano trills captured the eighties-era sound backed up by a most effective growling Mydland-esque voice. He will be missed both on and off the stage.

The Larned family has asked us to thank all of you for the outpouring of emotions you have shown. The family's service will be private but they will bring with them the love, memories and thoughts you have expressed. It is comforting for them to know that so many kind people were a part of Scott's life. We thank them for sharing him with us.

As mentioned above, we are still in shock and need to take some time to get our bearings. For now, we are cancelling the remaining dates of the Spring tour with our deepest apologies. Please check back at the website for information on a memorial as well as donations in Scott's name in lieu of flowers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a more personal note: When I first started working on this website for the band, Scott was the one with whom I collaborated. He would have been proud of the fact that I didn't end that last sentence with a preposition, for instance. In a previous but simultaneous life, he had been a teacher and the site became another student's paper to grade. One time in the early years he said to me, "I can trust you to write what I would and not have to proofread every word." And so I tried to live up to that compliment. I now knew at least part of my audience and spent many hours just trying to make Scott smile when he would check in. It had been a cinch...a silly photo, a casual inside joke...it wasn't hard to find something to say. Until this Sunday. The first thing that I thought was "what would he want me to say?" followed by the realization that without him I had no grade, no teacher and, worst of all, no friend to make smile. If the site seems not up to it's usual caliber in the coming weeks, I apologize in advance for I have lost one hell of a creative mind to work with. (Sorry for that last preposition, Scott...)

Don't buy Pepsi in the new can. Pepsi has a new "patriotic" can coming out with pictures of the Empire State Building, and the Pledge of Allegiance on them. However, Pepsi left out two little words on the pledge, "Under God." Pepsi said they didn't want to offend anyone. In that case, we don't want to offend anyone at the Pepsi corporate office either.. So if we don't buy any Pepsi product, they will not be offended when they don't receive our money that has the words "In God We Trust" on it.

Sometimes life can be difficult to bear…

Lynn Melody just informed me that Tim Cooley, fellow musician and good friend, passed from us on Valentines Day, 2005. Cause of death is as yet undetermined.

Tim loved music and was always so full of excitement every time he played or even spoke of it. We last worked together in June of last year in Brookfield, Illinois… We had a blast as always. It always struck me just how many friends Tim had as the joint was always packed with them whenever he’d make the trip up from Florida to do a few gigs in his hometown. For sure I’ll miss him and I won’t be alone.

The Good Lord provide you rest in Jesus Christ my brother…

Probably my last "Hello" from the Lone Star State... I just took my last test that matters at all, though it's only a Pass/Fail and has no bearing on our GPA's. I'm sure I aced it.

I have finished Phase 1 second in my class overall, letting that guy named Humphrey beat me out for Distinguished Honor Graduate. However, on the positive side, I did come in 1st overall in classwork; it was just the damn positioning that gave me problems in the beginning.

Later this morning we will be taking a practice Registry exam; they say if we score 60 or higher on this one we should have no problems scoring the required 75 or above on the real one after we finish Phase 2. I tol my instructor that I plan to get a 61 and not a point higher. Ha ha... we'll see. But after the practice exam it's all outprocessing from here. I'm done with school! Yippee!!

I am probably making my second skydive this Saturday, a final farewell to the big blue Texas sky. My classmates and I have big plans to do a lot of drinking and partying this weekend before saying goodbye to each other. It's going to be very emotional. I have not really hung out at all with the other people going to Ft. Bragg. My closest friends here are going to Ft. Lewis, WA, Ft. Carson, CO, Ft. Meade, MD, and Ft. Bliss and Ft. Hood, TX. It'll be sad to leave these guys.

Nathan and my mom are coming to my class closing ceremony. They fly in Sunday afternoon and leave Wednesday evening. I can't wait!

I have to get back to the classroom now. Love you all!!

Sorry to hijack your board Bob, but I thought people might find this easy to use if they were looking for a way to help. They have collected over $5 million in nder 2 days!! Every little bit can help these people!

Hey Bob,

If you don't have a gig on New Year's you should stop by Jar Jar's party in Elburn (kinda near Dekalb)
Ben Crooch, Ed Connell and a few other guys will be jamming out, we'd love to see you sit in for a few songs.

Just an idea....

Hi Bobby,

This weekend, I was listening to the first two CDs of your former band, and while I was nearly wiping the tears from my face (both because your shit tears me up, AND because I still wish that the breakup never had happend), I noticed that on Parking Karma your guitar sounds a bit muted compared with Bad Hair Day. Was this on purpose, or due to an improvement in technologies? Also, it sounds like you were able to "go to town" a bit more on BHD, as you sounded a bit more reserved on PK. Any thoughts?

Thanks
