.....Pistorius into semis in Olympic debut

Print......Oscar Pistorius of South Africa became the first double amputee to compete on the track at an Olympics, finishing second in his 400-metre heat on Saturday to advance to the next round.

Pistorius, who runs on carbon-fibre blades, circled the oval in his season's best time of 45.44 seconds - good enough for second place in his heat and a berth in the semi-finals on Sunday night.

Pistorius waged a long fight to run in the Olympics against able-bodied opponents and finally got that chance on a sunny morning in front of a sellout crowd at Olympic Stadium.

Pistorius was born without fibulas and his legs were amputated below the knee before he was a year old.

.
This edition, we profile South Australian Dignity for Disability MP Kelly Vincent from who – in 2009 at the age of 21 – became the youngest woman ever elected to an Australian parliament. And we catch up with South African athlete Oscar Pistorius, who runs on carbon fibre prosthetic limbs and hopes to qualify for both the Paralympics and the Olympics in London this year. We’ve also managed to work in a Ryan Gosling angle for this cover story – but you’ll have to pick up a copy to find out how!
Also in this issue:

Melissa Cranenburgh talks rocks, paper…and self-help with controversial memoirist Augusten Burroughs; Anthony Morris ponders the marketing tactics behind Alien director Ridley Scott’s new film; the Governor-General joins the gang at the Women’s Subscription Enterprise; and ‘Roving Eye’ takes a peak at the weird and wonderful specimens stored out of public view at the American Museum of Natural History.

This edition’s ‘Vendor Profile’ is Ernie from Ipswich and we have ‘Streetsheet’ contributions from Bryan M in Canberra, Greg in Adelaide, Eric in Sydney, Robby B in Ipswich, Brad in Perth and Michael and Owen D in Melbourne. We’re also especially proud to publish some excellent artwork by a Perth vendor, Tony, who recently held an exhibition in Fremantle. (He got rave reviews in The West Australian!)
