Subject: An explanation

Hello, all. I have not been around much.

It is true that I had a bad run of some behavior issues at school and home and I was occasionally "restricted" in my access to here. I am over that. Mom and Dad and I have talked it through and there is a plan!

Mostly, I have been sick. Some of you know that I have a genetic issue that causes me to form kidney stones. It has manifest itself for over two years now. Last February, I lost my left kidney due to damage from constant stones and infections. It was a long recovery. In the midst of all of that, I formed scar tissue and had to have two surgeries to correct that and I developed histoplasmosis (now cured - I was working on a pig farm at the time)and I had appendicitis.

The summer was better. I found a job at a music store and I made plans for school. I was still a little weak but I had not made more stones even though the likelihood was there.

My good run ended in August. Since August, I have had four stone episodes. After the last one over the weekend, I developed a reaction to anesthesia that has had me down most of the week.

I am all good again and life seems to be back to normal. Mom says I can return to school on Monday.

I just wanted you all to be aware as to why I may not come around too often sometimes.

Thanks!

Hi PJ. Thanks for letting us know. We thought it was because of the other thing with you and Nathan that you weren't coming here. I'm glad you're ok though. i hope you don't have any more problems with those kidney stones. We missed you around here.

Because of my surgery, I can NEVER again play football or any "contact" type of sport.

Here is the deal: I only have one kidney now. I can function fine and will do well with just one BUT I have to have at least one. Without a kidney I would die without a transplant or dialysis. I MUST, however, protect my happy kidney. The doctors STRONGLY DISCOURAGED football or any "contact" sports due to chance of injury, albeit possibly minimal. I cannot risk hurting Rightie. My coach said NO! He said that he did not want to risk it for me. He said it was not worth losing my life to a bad hit. He also said the school's insurance would not permit it. Dad is against it and Mom said categorically no way. So, I am done!

I am so bummed and sad inside but, frankly, I agree. Nothing would probably ever happen but if I took a tackle or a hit the wrong way in my right side, even with pads, I could injure the only kidney I have and I would be dead in about three days. I have to evaluate my priorities. Truly my life is worth more than playing a game.

Coach said I could still be with the team and I could move chains, keep stats, and manage equipment.

I am so glad I earned my letter last year. I will still wear my letter jacket with pride.

GO Bulldogs!!

It really doesn't feel different, I just get tired easier.

Kidney stones are horribly painful. I would explain some of the procedures they use on me to treat them but all of the guys would run away screaming.

Thanks for asking. You are NOT nosy. I don't mind sharing.

Hi PJ,

I'm sorry you are having problems with kidney stones. I looked that up & they sound awful. Does it feel any different to have only one kidney? Is that why you don't play sports anymore? I hope I'm not being to nosy.

But I'm glad you are ok now. Me & Sean thought it might have had something to do with Nathan and those posts. I'm glad you are back.

I'm really sorry to hear your stones are coming back. We're all thinking of you, and I'm glad you're better now. Hope it stays that way as long as possible.

Lucy
