Does getting spanked help you behave better in the future? In other words, do you learn not to do whatever it was that got you a spanking? Of course you don't like it at the time you are spanked- because it hurts- but do you think it works to teach you not to repeat misbehavior?

YES.
To the extent that I recognise I have a problem with the f word and have even self-reported its use, and yes, I am slowly controlling it.

It has also been a good thing in our family. I was only introduced when I was 13 because groundings were making everyone mad, leading to rows, further groundings and unhappiness all round. Now, I feel that something is 'cleared' and behind me (or on my behind!)

There is some deterrent value in a spanking. I think, though, at my age, I sort of know what to do and not to do and so "violations" are usually willful on my part. When I am contemplating breaking a rule, I do sometimes think about the fact of punishment and that does sometimes stop me, and, so yes, it helps.

But, I guess, now, a spanking is more of a punishment for me and a way of getting rid of guilt. (See my 3 P theory.)

I think it does most of the time especially when I got older. If I know it's something that I could get in trouble for then I won't do it.

But if I think I can get away with something then I will do it, whatever it is. So if I don't think I will get caught then I will go ahead do something I'm not supposed to. Does that make any sense? I think most kids are like that.

But then I usually get caught and get spanked so why did I go ahead and do it?
