Subject: A humiliating moment today

I had need to see a pediatric nutritionist this afternoon. I am all OK, just some bad nutrient numbers but I have been given vitamins.

In the waiting room were: Me and Mom, A lady and her girl toddler, and a lady with two kids; about a ten year old girl and a boy thirteen, maybe fourteenish.

The teen boy seemed to be a cool kid. I am not sure why he was dragged along as his sister was the patient, but, oh well.

So, his sister is playing with one of those bead things and the Mom is sticking her face in a magazine. The boy pulls out an iPhone and starts playing a game.

The mom snarks at him, "I told you to bring your summer reading book."

He says, "I am sorry, I forgot."

She says, "I told you to be reading it this week, you have put it off all summer. Have you read it at all?"

He is quiet and is suddenly studying his flip-flops.

She says, "Blake, did you hear me? Have you read it any this week?"

Now she isn't screaming but she is talking normally to a bit loud and everyone in the waiting room can hear the conversation.

He mumbles, "No, m'am, I 'm sorry, I forgot."

I couldn't believe what she then said to him, "Blake, I am tired of having this conversation with you and I am tired of hearing I forgot. When we get home we will see if the paddle can help your memory."

Poor Blake looks mortified and he turns red and hangs his head. I could see he was wet-eyed and had a couple of tears on his cheeks. I am not sure if he was crying over the promised spanking or the humiliation, or both. I guess both.

Mom then adds, "I'm serious, I have had it, when we get home, I am wearing you out."

OK, she could have left all that out. He already had been sentenced, he did not need to hear more.

Then little sister pipes in, "Mom, are you gonna give Blake a spanking?"

Mom just says, "Yes, honey, I am."

Blake now excuses himself saying to his Mom that he needed to use the restroom.

When he got back, I could tell he had been crying. I am thinking about the humiliation of it all.

I caught eye contact with him and sent him the universal guy message. "It's OK, Dude, you will never see these people again. Just try to keep quiet, go home, get your spanking and read the darn book. And I am sorry your Mom said that in front of everyone." Yes, we can say a lot with eye contact.

He gave me a weak smile that said, "Yeah, thanks Dude, I am just really embarrassed and I want to die but I understand."

I got called back and when I left, they were gone.

So, somewhere near here, poor Blake is sitting on a sore bottom and reading some boring book.

OK, I don't know their rules or their family or what all Blake and his mom have been through. It is very possible the kid deserved the paddling of his life. I am not saying he did not deserve to be punished, I don't know.

What I am saying is that his mother should not have embarrassed him like that. I would have just died ten times. But, I am fortunate, neither Mom nor Dad would have done that. Could that discussion not have waited until the car or until they got home?

OK, Mom may have said, "where's your summer reading?" I would have said, "I forgot." If Mom had of had issue with that, she would have chewed my butt when we got to the car and, if a spanking was needed, passed sentence there, but NEVER in front of others, especially strangers.

Mom and Dad are good about respecting our privacy when it comes to spanking as much as they can. We are sentenced in private and execution is handled in private, excepting, of course, if we are in trouble together. We brothers and friends also try to give the spankee some space. We go outside if we can or we try to ignore the slaps, whacks, cries and howls. (It is hard.) In a family, you will hear and know stuff. But, in a public waiting room? No way!

Any thoughts on that.

Oh, afterwards, my Mom was upset. She affirmed her promise to never do that to me. I thanked her.

Poor Blake! I feel bad for him just reading about it. I'm glad my parents don't do that either and I don't think parents should do that.

I don't know if there's sometimes that it has to be in public but that wasn't since nothing happened right then. Seems like it could have waited. I think it makes other people uncomfortable too, like everybody in the waiting room would feel bad for Blake and not the mom.

Cool you sent him the "universal guy message"

I would hate that too. Mom has done something like that when I was little like 5 or 6. We was in a store and I was whining and cutting up and she got really mad which is not like her. She yelled and said "if you don't cut that out now, i will jerk you out of here so fast and give you the biggest bare bottom spanking of your life!" I was so scared I can still remember more or less what she said. Believe me I stopped for sure.

A parent needs to be very considerate of what their child experiences in their childhood. I know that thre are certain experiences That I had as a kid which remain very vivid still today. I hope that what happened to Blake this day will not be one of those for him.

When a parent has to punish a child, it should all be done in private, unless there were siblings that were also involved. It is not right to make a public announcement of the spanking or any other punishment, for that matter. My heart breaks for what Blake endured.

No parent is perfect; we all make mistakes. I truly hope that PJ simply saw this mother on an "off day," and that she is usually a great mother. Let's keep Blake in our prayers!

That is totally not right! My parents would NEVER do that to us. We get warnings but it's usually done pretty quiet. I feel sorry for that kid. That must have been so embarassing!
