The big crash happened when Gus went on vacation back in 2002. While he was away the hosting company killed the service because of some outstanding money; Gus was funding the whole site by himself and I guess it eventually became more than he could handle, even with advertising and donations. When Gus finally returned from vacation he found the site gone and a groups of lost souls hanging around on the 'voy' forum. That's when Toby and jaffar stepped in with a temporary new BEN until Gus could get things back in order with at least a subset of the old BEN.
There were two or three other BEN regulars who went off at the same time to start up their own E30 sites...at least 2 of them are still up and running with lots of members.
