In reply to: i eta you 's message, "was there ever a schrick cam made for the eta?" on 17:12:21 07/18/02 Thu

Some will swear that hotter eta cams were never made, but that would be incorrect. Schrick did make two so-called hot cams for the eta engine, but they were very short lived and an even shorter production time. I have not seen nor heard of one for sale anywhere since about 1988. I know that in 1990 they were almost impossible to find. I don't think that very many even made it to the US. The price for one in 1988 was about $700 and they had minimal gains. Nowadays every hot cam eta that I have seen/driven/built uses an OE or greater 'i' cam, minor head work (drilling new oil journals), and will only be effective if you have a chip made to increase your revs. The 'i' cam in the eta engine will cause your lowend rpm power to suffer greatly. The motor, in my experience, won't wake up until about 3700rpm. At that rpm, you will definitely feel the difference, but almost as soon as it kicks in, you hit the rev limiter. Your performance will actually suffer.

If you are looking for a kick in the pants, change your diff to a 3.46LSD (I am using a 3.73 and it is a little much for the normal person) and use an 'i' throttle body with a normal JC or Dinan chip. It is really a cheap bang for the buck and a huge power increase. I have an 86 325 and I never fear any other BMW other than the e36 and newer //M cars. I frequently hang with a very modified 89 325is with 304 Schrick and MAF conversion (just to name a couple of mods on that car) up to about 85MPH. From that speed he starts to walk away from me. Don't let anyone get you down on an eta. In my opinion, it has more potential than the 'i' motor. If you like to hit the rev limiter, the e30 M3 is fun to play with too. If the right driver is in the e30 M3, he will take you, but he will also be surprised that you are right with him.

I have done a lot to my eta, but I have seen more problems (reliability) with the 'i'. I don't think that I would buy an 'i' if I had the choice between the 'i' and eta. Another e30 that is not to be underestimated is the 318is with the M40 engine. With the right driver, that 318 is pretty potent. I never gave the 318's any credit until I drove one. That little M40 4cyl is a good reliable motor. It isn't easy to modify but it really surprised me compared to the 318 with the old M10 engine.

Send me an email if you like. I am always very busy and get a lot of BMW email, but I always respond fast to eta email. I have done a lot of mods and tried some pretty crazy stuff. Some things work, some don't. What I have found is that you can get quite a bit of power out of the eta with OE BMW parts. Most of those parts are from the 'i' motor, Z3, e28, and e34's.
