Subject: intermittent occasional 'engine putt' during high idle

im sure most of you know of the very high idling problem on my '84 318i. for those who dont, due to i believe a bad ICU (L-Jetronic), i will idle b4 driving (cold) at usually 2000, sometimes 1500 or so. after driving (warm), i'll idle 2000 to 3000, often right around 2600 or 2700. well, i have an odd problem that usually only occurs during idling right around 3000. the engine will sometimes intermittently um, putt. itll be holding 3000 rpm, and you can listen and watch the engine at the same time, and you'll hear a sort of small dead putt noise, and when that noise occurs, simultaneously you will see the engine twitch. what is this?
