Yes, this is a common spin people try to put on things and I admit that even amongst tragedy there can be a learning experience that can broaden a person's horizon or prohibit futher tragedy, but to say to purposely bring tragedy to teach such a thing, seems barbaric.

Also, there are scenarios that there can't be any good. A person who lives all alone in the woods, no family or friends, is brutally tortured, raped, and murdered. Nobody knew about this person before, nor do they know about their tragedy. The murderer goes on with life like nothing happened, maybe to kill again, maybe to not. It is never in the news, never in print, just a senseless unknown torture and murder. What good spin can you put on it?
