Subject: How to create your own Forum

You've come to Voy forums, hoping to start a new subject. But, the layout seems too simple. Here are a few easy steps which will make this task easy. This is only meant to serve as a guideline. So, you're not required to use all methods. You may only apply those which best suit your needs.

So, my first suggestion is to make an immediate aesthetics change to the entire forum. This little method will change your entire forum from Chaotic to BOXY AND NEAT.
--------------------------------------------------

Log into the Forum Administration Menu
--------------------------------------------------

if you scroll down through all the options,
where is says "GENERAL" "Advanced User Options"
go near the bottom, and you'll find "CSS, & TABLES, & BORDERS".

when you click that, there'll be a number of options, which are considered "Advanced". Now, scroll down to the bottom of that page, as well.

There's a large box which says
"CSS CODE: THIS IS THE ACTUAL CODE".

It currently reads
.va{font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}

---------------------------------------------

erase that, and change it to THIS CODE:
--------------------------------------------

.cb{background-color:#9d9d9d}
.chd{background-color:#7a7789;font-family:arial;font-weight:bold;color:#ffffff}
.c1{background-color:#aed1e8}
.c2{background-color:#ddE4FF}
.cp{background-color:#85a5b4}
.va{color:#000099;font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}
.ttm{font-size:9pt}

Now, that you want to start your own forum,
Log in, and,

go to GENERAL FORUM SETTINGS (basic options)

Choose your Forum Title.
Then, enhance your forum by choosing a URL to Header Image.
This will put a nice image at the top of screen.

FOR EXAMPLE:
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg1xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

--------------------------------------------------------
Then, Choose your main page description
Write material in your HEADER (HTML ALLOWED)

IF you're not familiar with Basic HTML, here's a good tutorial.
http://jollyoldsaintnick.net/carols/howtousehtml.html

http://jollyoldsaintnick.net/carols/htmlsymbols2.html

In short, the most important HTML symbols are

- which allows your paragraphs to break to the next line.

allows your words to break into an entirely new paragraph.
For example:
"Welcome to our forum
please, no inflammatory comments allowed.

Thank you for visiting."

next, go to Forum index format:

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE.
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU CHOOSE [COMPACT MODE].

in the "Reply format", I STRONGLY RECOMMEND, you choose VERBOSE.

so,
Forum index should be COMBAT,
Reply format should be VERBOSE.

I choose "Reverse threads".

scroll down,
and it asks for a URL TO BACKGROUND image.
This will make the forum look much nicer. Please choose a simple design. Nothing colorful.

Here's an example:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4922412299_ba7c22d3ce.jpg

please do not use this background icon. It is simply a guideline, since many people have complained that their FLICKR images didn't work. You must use the "http://FARM5.STATIC.FLICKR.com" beginning. I know, it's stupid.

Then, choose whether you want to moderate the forum. If you check this option, then NO comments will appear without approval. So, you probably shouldn't choose this option.

I keep Anonymous posting Unchecked.
I Require a name with posts.
DO NOT require an E mail address with posts.

I named the most important feature as
--------------------------
Forum index should be COMBAT,
Reply format should be VERBOSE.
---------------------------

The reason is because this allows you to keep the written threads hidden from the main page. They are neatly contained within a box.
AND, when you click them, The VERBOSE feature allows you to read all the comments within that thread, without needing to re-click.

Aside from that,
You have other options, such as choosing your listing category, and other nice features.
So, don't forget to visit these areas.

HOWEVER,
This tutorial primarily focuses on Aesthetic and practical features. So, I will NOT cover this area.

The next important step is to scroll down,
past
Theme Selector
Category Manager
Admin Password

DISPLAY SETTINGS.
This is similar to General Forum Settings. Only better.
--------------------------------------------------------

Note: if you choose a Background image,
it will override the Background Color feature.

I will explore this area in Step 4.

Here, I would like to suggest another IMPORTANT FEATURE.

When you scroll down halfway through DISPLAY SETTINGS,
you'll see the MESSAGE LISTING FORMAT AND STYLE section.

You'll see that Forum Index and REPLY format have already been changed to
COMPACT, VERBOSE.
Next, on STYLE:
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU CHANGE THIS.
Instead of TEXT 1, CHANGE IT TO TABLE 1.

This will make your forum MUCH easier to read.
You can always change it back, if you don't like it.

This next bit of information will alter the entire physical appearance of the forum.

ALTHOUGH,
You choose your background image in the GENERAL SETTINGS,
this can also be done in the DISPLAY SETTINGS.

In the General Settings
You scroll halfway down.
Past,
Your e-mail address
E-mail you with Voyforums Updates
Can Be Listed In our forum category. ....etc.
Header
Footer ....etc.
URL to Background image
BACKGROUND COLOR.

Let's bypass this entire section,
and go to DISPLAY SETTINGS

go past
Theme Selector
Category Manager
Admin Password

----------------------------------------
I PREFER USING ADVANCED USER OPTIONS.
----------------------------------------

So, once you click
"New Options DISPLAY SETTINGS".

You'll see many options.
And, this offers the best selection.

URL to Header Image
ALT-Text for Header Image Tag
Header image border width
URL of your Homepage for link-back
Text for link-back
URL to Background image
Background color
Normal text color
Link color
Visited link color
Active link color
Additional
------------

In another tutorial,
I will browse through all these features.

BUT, for now: I Will only focus on ONE.

will see several features in PAGE DESIGN.

URL TO Header Image.
This is NOT the photo to the background.
It's the header Image on Top.

Now, scroll down past....
URL to Header
ALT-Text for Header
Header image border width
URL of your Homepage for link-back
Text for link-back
URL to background image.
BACKGROUND COLOR.

I'm assuming that you're NOT using a background image.

So, instead, you will choose your own background color.

This will change the entire appearance of your forum.
So, here we go......

[> Subject: Re: STEP 4b How to input colors.

Date Posted: 20:47:22 01/29/13 Tue

Now that you're in FORUM DISPLAY SETTINGS,

scroll down past

URL TO Header Image, URL to Header, ALT-Text for Header,
Header image border width,URL of your Homepage for link-back,
Text for link-back, URL to background image, BACKGROUND COLOR.

I'm assuming that you're NOT using a background image.

So, instead, you will choose your own background color.

So, here we go......

I would strongly recommend using a simple color.
But, in order to do this, you must input 6 numbers
(which represent the color you're choosing).

On most browsers, you'll probably need to include the # symbol.

So, for example:

in the BACKGROUND COLOR option, try inputting a few numbers.

LET'S TRY changing the color to YELLOW.
So, input the code #FFE5B1.
(of course, at the bottom, click the "SUBMIT" button.
and, WOW, you're entire background is Yellow.

Okay, so you don't like the color.
But it's EASY to change it.
Click the back button on your browser.
VOY FORUMS is the most click-back friendly website on the entire internet.
In other words, you can press the BACK arrow, and it will not corrupt the data (Nor will it require re-log in).

SO, let's try another color.
It's a good idea to learn about all the different numbers.

Here's a few examples:
#FFFFFF is white. Of course, that's too dull.
#EFEFEF is whitish. Just a touch Off-white.
#CCCCCC is grayish.
#AAAAAA is darker gray.
#9D9D9D is a touch darker gray.
#888888 is darker yet.
#555555 is almost black. Probably not desirable.
#000000 is Black. Pitch black.

It's ironic to note that Black can be a nice color for forums.
If you can adjust other features, and the color of links.
------------------------------------------------------
For this,
you might want to use the GENERAL SETTINGS feature.

The reason is because Voy forums has a preset feature,
which creates a nicely prepared
normal text color, link color, visited link color, active link color.

But,
I'm assuming that most people will choose lighter colors.

Obviously, there are plenty of additional colors you may use.
But this will help you when choosing.

Now it's time for the more complicated stuff.
I will NOT give any explanations on why this is done.
I will only give basic instructions which you might want to follow exactly. (In other words: don't bother trying to ask why or how it works.)
-----------------------------

When you're making your own Voy Forum, the silver tuna is being able to distinguish comments separately from the background.

In other words: You don't want the entire page to be the same exact color.
IT would be much preferable to define a foreground.

So, please follow these steps:
GO TO
Advanced User Controls
General
now, scroll down past date format, banning, Index,
AND GO TO:
ADVANCED FORUM CSS & TABLE-STYLE SETTINGS

--------------------------------------

go past
Forum Style
Page Background Color
Normal Text Color
Visited Link Color
Active link color
URL to background
Table Layout (CHOOSE #2 CLEAN)
Force Message Tables to 100% (Check YES)

scroll past CSS (cascading style sheet

Go all the way to
COMPACT & SUPERCOMPACT MODES ONLY

Now, copy these options exactly
-------------------------------------------------

Row of Header Titles: (You can leave this line blank)

Title 1 (ie. Subject/TD tag): chd

Title 2 (ie. Author/TD tag): chd

Title 3 (ie. Date/TD tag): chd

Title 4 (ie. MsgCounts/TD tag): chd

Row for Message (TR tag): c1

Area 1 (ie. subject/TD tag): ...blank

Area 2 (ie. author/TD tag): ....blank

Area 3 (ie. date/TD tag): ..you can leave blank

Area 4 (ie. msgcounts/TD tag) :...blank

Doing this enables your Thread headlines to have its own color.

Now,
please repeat these sequences WITHOUT asking questions.

Where it says
GLOBAL/other
------

Message Tables: ... (leave blank)

Message Table Borders: cb

Post-box Tables: cp

Post-box Table Borders: cb

Message View - Top : chd

Message View - Left: c1

Message View - Right : c2

Area saying "Replies": c2

Area saying "Replies": c2

Doing this enables your reply-section to create its own color. Wow.
Now, your forum starts to take on a professional appearance.

In other words,
Not only can you change the color of your forum headline,
but, the responses will have yet another color.

Of course, you should be careful, because some sequences might look terrible, of course.

SO, keep them typical.
For example:
If you choose an orange Title of thead,
then,
you should choose a lighter orange (or darker orange) response.
But, that's quite obvious.

So, in the previous lesson,
you're being told to input simple letters into the option boxes.
So, when it asks for
Title 1 (ie. Subject/TD tag):
You're supposed to input the letters chd

and, so on. It's that simple.
Now, you've unleashed the power of CSS.
And, you needn't have any knowledge of CSS whatsoever.

Just toggle the #000000 colors, etc to your liking.

Here's the CSS sequence which creates a darkish blue appearance.

-----------------------------------------

.cb{background-color:#9d9d9d}
.chd{background-color:#7a7789;font-family:arial;font-weight:bold;color:#ffffff}
.c1{background-color:#aed1e8}
.c2{background-color:#ddE4FF}
.cp{background-color:#85a5b4}
.va{color:#000099;font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}
.ttm{font-size:9pt}

------------------------------------

Or, maybe, try this one (just for practice).

this creates a strong, bright Baby Blue appearance.
-------------------------------------

.cb{background-color:#9d9d9d}
.chd{background-color:#7a7789;font-family:arial;font-weight:bold;color:#ffffff}
.c1{background-color:#aed1e8}
.c2{background-color:#ddE4FF}
.cp{background-color:#99ccff}
.va{color:#000099;font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}
.ttm{font-size:9pt}

[> Subject: Step 6: CHANGE EVERYTHING.

Date Posted: 10:23:28 01/30/13 Wed

Let's TRY to make sense of this.....
-------------------------------
.cb{background-color:#9d9d9d}
-------------------------------
this appears to put a "Halo" around your
entire box of comments.
So, if the number is light green (FFCC99),
it will appear like a pleasant halo.
Or, if you choose dark blue (CCFF99),
it will seem stronger and more pronounced.

--------------------------------------
.chd{background-color:#7a7789;font-family:arial;font-weight:bold;color:#ffffff}
--------------------------------------

the number being used is a dull dark gray (7a7789).
This line alters the SUBJECT LINE.
Yes, this too can become a different color.
Although, this is not the most important feature.
Still though, let's try FF9999.
and the subject becomes orange.
It might be better off Dull Gray (lol).
The FFFFFF should probably be left alone.
This changes the color of the text. NOT a good idea.

------------------------------------
.c1{background-color:#aed1e8}
------------------------------------
THIS LINE IS IMPORTANT.
It changes the color of all your TOPICS.

-----------------------------------
.c2{background-color:#ddE4FF}
-----------------------------------
IMPORTANT IMPORTANT
This line alters the entire color of
your messages AND Body.
This will also effect after you've clicked inside.
So, the entire thread will bear this color.

------------------------------------
.cp{background-color:#99ccff}
------------------------------------
This line controls that huge box which says
"post a New Public Comment".
Sometimes, you may choose the same color as
the subject. That works nice.
Or, you can try a slightly different shade.
Of course, it's a good idea to keep a theme.
So, it's nice to use varying shads of blue, for instance.

----------------------------------------------
.va{color:#000099;font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}
.ttm{font-size:9pt}
----------------------------------------------
The final 3 lines should be fine, in their current state.

Assuming you are now in the
Advanced Forum CSS & Table-style Settings

and you're scrolled down to
CSS code (this is the actual code)

If you want to create your own unique forum,
Just remember that lines .c1, .c2, and .cp are most important.
So, if you only toggle those 3 lines,
this can change the entire "look" of your forum.
(So, replace XXXXXX with a 6-digit number.
(and, of course,
remove the words "Topics", "Messages And Body" "The Comment Box"

.cb{background-color:#9d9d9d}
.chd{background-color:#7a7789;font-family:arial;font-weight:bold;color:#ffffff}
.c1{background-color:#xxxxxx} Topics
.c2{background-color:#xxxxxx} Messages AND Body
.cp{background-color:#xxxxxx} The Comment Box
.va{color:#000099;font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}
.ttm{font-size:9pt}

For your convenience, I've given a few examples.
These are not the only options available.
and, each color coordination can produce hundreds of possibilities.
-------------------------------
So, here are a few basic types:

YELLOW

.cb{background-color:#9d9d9d}

.c1{background-color:#FF99FF}

.cp{background-color:#FF33FF}
.va{color:#000099;font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}
.ttm{font-size:9pt}

Off White

.cb{background-color:#9d9d9d}
.chd{background-color:#7a7789;font-family:arial;font-weight:bold;color:#ffffff}
.c1{background-color:#CCCCCC} Topics
.c2{background-color:#EFEFEF} Messages AND Body
.cp{background-color:#AAAAAA} The Comment Box
.va{color:#000099;font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}

.cb{background-color:#9d9d9d}
.chd{background-color:#7a7789;font-family:arial;font-weight:bold;color:#ffffff}
.c1{background-color:#AAAAAA}
.c2{background-color:#CCCCCC}
.cp{background-color:#9D9D9D}
.va{color:#000099;font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}
.ttm{font-size:9pt}

SOOO.
In short, you simply alter those 3 important lines.
And, replace it with a 6-digit number of your choice.

.cb{background-color:#9d9d9d}
.chd{background-color:#7a7789;font-family:arial;font-weight:bold;color:#ffffff}
.c1{background-color:#xxxxxx} Topics
.c2{background-color:#xxxxxx} Messages AND Body
(choose a lighter color)
.cp{background-color:#xxxxxx} The Comment Box
.va{color:#000099;font-style:italic;font-weight:bolder}
.vu{font-style:italic;font-weight:bold}
.ttm{font-size:9pt}

You may change all the colors, if desired.
But, these 3 lines are the bulk of physical changes.

Of course, if you want to choose a dark color,
such as Dark blue, or black;
you will probably need to completely change the Word schemes.

It's best to remove the original message with each post.

You'll notice that, each time you reply to a comment, the original comment appears along with your response.

This is very annoying.

SO, go to
Advanced User Options
General Message Manager
(New options) Display Settings:
Many options controlling forum looks.

Scroll way down,
Past Page Design
Past Message Listing Format and Style
Past Message Format-Specific Features
and into
Enable/Disable Display Features

Now, scroll down where it says:
Reply box: Quote original message?

Disable if you do not want the message to automatically be quoted in replies.

UNCHECK THAT BOX. You don't want the Reply.

Also, DOn't allow commenting on archived threads.

Allow replies to Archived Threads?
(threads will be moved out of archive and into the active/main index)
KEEP THIS UNCKECKED.
You only want people to comment on the Front page of the forum.
Eventually, your forum can have 9 or 10 pages of archives.

BUT, if you attempt to comment on them, it might corrupt the entire forum.

IN other words, Voy forums has a slight glitch.
Here's an example:

http://www.voy.com/219711/

That forum needs to be repaired.
And you'll find plenty of Voy forums with the same errors.
BUT THIS NEVER OCCURS, so long as you keep that box unchecked.

in your Forum Administration menu,
in the Advanced User Options:
go to CSS, TABLES, & BORDERS.

You've probably noticed that, near the bottom;
the GENERAL TABLE SETTINGS gives "ADDITIONAL ATTRIBS FOR MESSAGE".

Of course, the current default settings are recommended.
border=1 cellpadding=2 cellspacing=1

the next line is blank

Then, ADDITIONAL ATTRIBS FOR MESSAGE TABLE BORDER is:
border=1 cellpadding=10 cellspacing=1

and, line 4 is blank.

------
Just for fun, watch what happens if you change line 1 to:
border=1 cellpadding=2 cellspacing=10
Yes, annoying.
Try changing it to
border=1 cellpadding=2 cellspacing=0

not very noticeable.
But this section does alter the effects.
Note: that most changes would be negative.
So, it's usually best to keep the default settings.

However, if so desired, add code to line 2. and line 4
So, where it says
Additional attribs for Message Table border:
try entering a code.
border=1 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=2
This will add a 2nd box around your comments and reply.
It's barely noticeable.
But, the forum gains a more professional look.
Notice, afterward,
colors can be altered in the "CSS code (this is the actual code)"
...More on this later....

back to GENERAL TABLE SETTINGS,
you may also input code into line 4.
Additional attribs for Post message-form border:
border=1 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=3

--------------------------------------

So, your lines might look something like this:
line 1
border=1 cellpadding=2 cellspacing=1

line 2 (no longer blank)
border=1 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=2

line 3
border=1 cellpadding=10 cellspacing=1

line 4 (no longer blank)
border=1 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=3
