The Great Abbott Scare campaign now begins in earnest

THE election battlelines are now drawn. The Gillard government will ask the public to "think again" about Tony Abbott as it launches the Great Abbott Scare, while the Opposition Leader will argue that Labor's failures have created a national budget emergency.

Abbott's reply to the budget was his decisive step in juggling two roles - being a tactical Opposition Leader minimising Labor's scope for the Great Scare and preparing to be a prime minister who needs fiscal room to confront what he and opposition Treasury spokesman Joe Hockey believe is an emerging budget crisis. These roles are in conflict.
