So my family lives on the west coast so I couldn't go home for Thanksgiving.
But my employer brightened my day by telling me about a restaurant owner he knows personally and his charity:
It started out with me rolling plastic silverware packets in napkins.
Then we were putting bread and butter on the tables.
Then I worked with a 6 person assembly line serving out food for the homeless:
turkey
stuffing
vegetables
potatoes
gravy
and I was last ladeling out cranberries and putting the plates on the counter where serves could send them to the homeless people who came by busloads from various homeless shelters in the city.
Before the serving began, the restaraunt owner made a touching speech: these people are not street bums. Many innocently and sadly recently lost their jobs due to the September 11 economy change. But nonetheless, they are people living in America so they are to be treated like Americans.
I had a chance to walk around after we served the first busload. The last of the people served were eating. Just like us, they had clothing and smiles on their faces so I guess they're proud Americans just like us.
God bless America,
Steve
