Subject: Has Anybody Ever Dissolved Oral Medication and Taken it Rectally?

No - I'm not talking about suppositories.

I was talking with a friend of mine who happens to be a nurse, and she said that short of intravenous injection, rectal administration of medicine is the most effective means of getting medication into the system.

Think about it... if you take medication orally, it goes into your stomach where there may be food and surely stomach acid to inhibit efficient absorption.

Conversely, in the rectum - provided it's free of feces - medication gets absorbed directly through the rectal wall.

I had occasion to put this theory to the test recently. I sprained my ankle playing Frisbee with some friends. It swelled up pretty good, and initially was quite painful.

After everyone had gone home, I remembered that I had about a half dozen Vicodin pain pills left over from a knee surgery last year. Now might be a good time to take one. Then it occurred to me that I'd just eaten three slices of pizza for dinner. How much would that slow absorption of the vicodin?

* Ding * Idea 💡 *

I went into the bathroom where I had an empty Fleet enema stashed in a drawer. I use it with warm tap water every now and then, mainly because it just feels good.

So - after a couple of sessions with the Fleet - just to ensure I was properly cleaned out down low, I then filled the Fleet enema bottle with maybe a half inch of hot water - less than an ounce - then dropped a Vicodin tablet in and waited until it had thoroughly dissolved.

After shaking the solution thoroughly, I inserted the tip and squeezed it up into me.

Wow. It didn't come on immediately, but I started to feel results within five minutes, and markedly better results within ten minutes.

Subsequently, I did a little research. It turns out there are quite a few pain medications available in suppository form. I suppose one benefit of a suppository would be a more sustained release as it slowly melted, but I rather liked the more immediate response of my impromptu Vicodin enema.

A bit of research also revealed that medicine taken rectally can partially or fully bypass the liver's first pass metabolism because the veins in the lower rectum drain directly into the systemic circulation, skipping the portal vein that carries blood from the gut to the liver. This can offer better bioavailability for some drugs.

But not all drugs should be taken rectally. For example. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is fine whereas rectal Ibuprofin generally shows lower bioavailability and slower absorption - roughly 1-3 hours slower than when taken orally!

Anyway, just curious if any of you have thought about or have ever actually dissolved medicine in pill form and then taken it rectally?

And, just to be inclusive of all here, is there any chance that perhaps the neighbor lady next door has engaged in this activity? Or that she'd like to do so with you?
