Subject: Let Gavin Do It For You

I made four dresses, trying different patterns. Three were modified from dress patterns - VERY difficult, because the neck and waist were both wrong, and had to be re-drawn. Then I discovered a pattern by Amelia Cook, a photographer in America. Here's the link: www.ameliacook.com/other. She sold me the pattern, and it came as a PDF. It had to be enlarged about 1,000 times, which my local print shop did happily for about £20. The pattern is American size 6, but for a woman, not a girl. My 13 year old DD is slightly smaller on top, so again, had to modify the shape. The pattern is well designed, but very slim. You really have to know what you are doing to put it together, though. I changed the skirt from a velvet multi-panel to a two-tier white satin skater style. The dress came out very pretty - red velvet bodice, white chest and sleeves. I have an embroidery machine, so that part was no problem. But ... it's just not up to the heavy-hitting dresses we see in Intermediate and Open here. It will do until my daughter orders a new one from a dress maker, but with all the heartache, unpicking and re-sewing of the zip, and unbelievable satin stitching of seams and borders, it was a labour of extreme love. Pretty, but not really worth the effort. I won't make another.
