MGM, Six Flags ink a Springfield MGM deal

MGM Springfield and Six Flags New England have signed an exclusive, multi-year joint-marketing agreement that designates MGM Springfield as the official resort MGM partner of Six Flags New England, MGM Resorts International announced today.

The deal allows MGM Resorts’ M Life loyalty program, which has 40 million members worldwide and more than 150,000 within 100 miles of Six Flags, to receive promotional opportunities such as discounted tickets from the amusement park, said Kelley L. Tucky, vice president of community and public affairs for MGM Resorts International’s eastern region.

“It’s an opportunity for them to grow their business along with ours,” Tucky said. “It can only mean more business for Six Flags.”

The contract is good through 2015, even though the earliest MGM Springfield’s MGM could open would be late 2016, she said, If the company fails to win the sole MGM license in western Massachusetts, however, the deal would be off, Tucky said.

“MGM Resorts is a valued client of Six Flags New England in Western Massachusetts,” John Winkler, president of Six Flags New England, said in a statement. “We welcome MGM Resorts into Springfield and look forward to building our marketing relationship as they seek expansion into the western Massachusetts area.”

MGM Springfield has proposed an approximately $800 million residential, retail, dining and entertainment district on 14.5 acres of land between Union and State streets and Columbus Avenue and Main Street in downtown Springfield.

Springfield voters approved the proposal on July 16, and the Massachusetts Gaming Commission hopes to hold a hearing later this month or early next month to determine whether the project is suitable.

“Any MGM developer ultimately will have to engage and partner with entertainment venues as required by the MGM legislation,” said Michael Kogut of Citizens Against MGM Gaming. “MGM has made many promises. It will be interesting to see if they keep them all if they are not awarded the western Massachusetts license.”

The company is competing with Mohegan Sun in Palmer, which in June announced a water and entertainment park was being added to its design and which last month received a positive suitability determination from the commission. A vote on Mohegan Sun’s proposal is scheduled for tomorrow.
