Subject: Why end up in the middle of nowhere?

The subject of finding a "home base" for libertarians has always intrigued me. But why search for a location far away from civilization? When I spoke with libertarian writer Edith Efron about the subject in college (regarding the attempt at the time to found a new country in the South Pacific), she said "What are you going to do there, trade coconuts?" She had a point. Why not pick a nice but sparsly settled area of the United States proper (Wyoming? West Virginia? Alaska? Montana? Mississippi?), and invite all libertarians to come and live there. Once you hit a critical mass, you came wield political power by electing local and state politicians to office, and presumably eventually change the laws in a more libertarian direction. There was an attempt of this sort in the 1970's by a lady named Mary Glennie, who for several years tried to recruit libertarians to "come live in Ft. Collins" (Colorado); I don't know how the effort eventually turned out.
