Subject: Navassa

The Department of Interior has decided to declare Navassa off limits to the public. Bruce Babbitt has declared the Island a Wild Life Preserve for the time being, allegedly to protect the surrounding coral reef.

However, government officials are being allowed to visit the island.

An official has told me that it is possible in the near future that the status of the island may be changed and even possibly opened up to visitation and habitation by American citizens.

Navassa is located about 40 miles directly west of the tip of Haiti. It has been owned by the United States for over 100 years, used mostly as a Coast Guard station.
