Hi!

I'm on the IB too (surprise!) and writing my TOK essay on this question... I agree with what you wrote, and I have actually thought about the quite with the man, stars and bench, and was thinking of having it in my essay. I am a bit worried, however, that if I do, I might answer essay question #7 instead. When thinking about them, they seem very similar... What do you think???
My train of thought so far goes like this: We accept what we believe to be true, because we neither have the time or energy to ensure sufficient evidence thereof. A statement that seems to be valid, and that requires a great deal of evidence to prove, is likely to be accepted as true, since it would take too much effort to find all the evidence. However, if there is an easy way to validify the statement, we do it.
The quote "Tell a man there is 300 billion stars in the universe and he'll believe you. Tell a man a bench has wet paint on it and he'll have to touch it to be sure." clearly shows this.

Any comments are appreciated...!!

Maria
