Subject: CyberPunk Now (?)

I think the c-punk visionaries may have been right: It seems like the corporations are virtually in control already (at least in the U.S.). The gov't pretty much caters to their every whim -- even if it isn't for the good of the whole population (unless, of course, you're talking about the tabacco companies -- they're worth more money & votes when persecuted). Single citizens have no rights to privacy when it comes to corporations: urine tests, background searches, etc...etc... If you work for the corp you recieve the benefits unattainable thru many smaller (less abusive) businesses, but only by allowing your mail (or email) to be read, your calls to be listened to, your movements to be monitored & recorded, and your privacy in general to be forfeited. This is not quite the 'superpower' status portrayed in many of the cyberpunk works, but it's not all that distant anymore, either.
