Subject: No Cure For Cancer (or AIDS, etc...)

THERE WILL PROBABLY NEVER BE A CURE FOR CANCER, AIDS, OR ANY OTHER 'BIG MONEY' AILMENT.

If cancer were cured the life expectancy for most humans would be vastly expanded since the main cause of death of the elderly is usually related, in one way or another, to cancer. If all the senior citizens were able to live another 100 years (as some scientists suggest they would) would society be able to support them? We're having a hard time already and their life expectany has only gone up by 10-15 years in the last century. The US social security system was tuned to the average life expectancy of people in the early half of this century, but along with the post-war baby boom, the rise of the lifetime expectancy has seriously put a strain on the rest of us, especially now that 'they' (the baby boomers) are entering into retirement age. Now BIG MONEY enters the picture. Why would medical companies (hospitals, drug manufacturers, surgical equipment engineers, ect...) want to cure something that provides the vast majority (either directly or thru one of the other medical corporations) of their income? They wouldn't. It is far more profitable to continue treating the problem than it is to solve it. What this means is both the government and the companies have plenty of reasons not to cure anything (if it can be avoided without too much public outcry). People with AIDS and cancer can live quite awhile with the condition bringing in TONS of money to the corporations who treat it (and would be the most likely to discover a cure) who in turn use it to buy influence in the government.

The government is VERY opposed to anything that might change the face of their (and their supporters) income. An engine was designed a few years ago that ran on water. Water is free (or pretty close to it) -- OIL is NOT. Hence, the government (allegedly) sent some 'representitives' to the inventor's home to 'discourage' the proliforation of his creation. He claims they told him that if he sold any working models or the plans to one, something 'bad' would happen to him (instead he gave them to a fringe 'zine called 'Iron Feather' to publish free-of-charge). Assuming this is true, what makes you think they'd deal any differently with somone who discovered a cure to cancer or AIDS? I saw an article about a treatment for AIDS that appears to totally kill the virus EVERYWHERE in the human body. Guess where I saw the article: It was on the second to last page, buried in a bunch of ads of a state-wide newspaper. This paper isn't one of the 'tabloid' variety (if it was the article would have been plastered across the front page). This same paper publishes many articles on how many people have died from AIDS and how people are surviving with AIDS longer on their front page constantly. Which info do you think would sell more papers? Government intervention? Loss of ad revenue? Why do you think they buried this story?
