Lily walked across the beach in the warm sunlight, her flits competing for space on her body. Rann, her large brown, usually took up both her shoulders, but he was down the beach with his green mate, guarding their clutch. Bronze Garth had taken his place and was sprawling lazily. Tiff and Sil, her two greens, were sharing her hood, and blue Tin was held in her arms. All were quiet, so as not to disturb the queen flit, or Venieth, Lily's green dragon, who walked alongside them.
Look at all the eggs! Lily exclaimed, turning to Venieth. What colour shall I ask for?
How about a nice green? The dragon said, maliciously. Lily groaned. Her two greens, Tiff and Sil, had insisted on guarding their clutches. That meant hours sitting in the sun, with an irritable fire-lizard.
I wouldn't have minded with a gold, but greens don't guard! It isn't in the contract! She sighed. Five fire-lizards, she had. She could only have six, and she wanted desperately for the sixth one to be gold! She scanned the clutch, bowing to the queen and smiling at A'lan. All her flits chirruped quiet greetings to the pair, and Venieth rumbled a greeting.
"Queen, may I be worthy of your gold egg?" She asked. "I - I already have five fire-lizards, and to have a gold as the sixth would be such an honour. I will wait for as long as it takes." She added, seeing that the precious orb wasn't even rocking. "But - if you'd let me, I'd like to try." She smiled tentatively, waiting for the verdict.
