Subject: Chimera's Story

Listen, all you friends of Pern;
Listen, here is news to learn.
The tale of Chimera, witless man,
Who walks the woods of this foreign land.

Chimera, the son of a cook,
Traveled the land with his wandering father.
There were many new sights at which to look,
Thousands of events with which to bother.

Once, while Chimera played in a river,
His father made camp ‘neath a crumbling crag.
The noise he heard made Chimera shiver,
Not knowing the cliff had started to sag.

His father gave a cry of fright;
Chimera tried to run to his Dad.
The cliff collapsed during the night,
Leaving Chimera alone and sad.

Chimera fled into the forest,
Leaving behind the pile of rock.
Running away, his heart the sorest,
Fleeing from the human flock.

Running away, wanting to cry,
Chimera met an age-old dread.
While he was walking, from the sky,
Came the ancient menace of Thread.

He had seen the threat before,
Thread had left his mother Thread-scarred.
Chimera wished for a rock door,
Not finding one, he began to run hard.

Chimera did not escape.
Thread scored his wrists, and along his side.
Running into a cave near a lake,
Chimera began to wish he had died.

The cave, though convenient, was not empty;
It was a comfy cosy cave,
But was full of a family of wherry,
Who did their best Chimera to save.

They felt the pain of Chimera’s loss,
Licked the young boy back to health,
Snuffled him into a bed of moss,
Then nudged him onto a rocky shelf.

Chimera ran with the beasts,
Part of their life for the next seventeen years,
Partook of their vegetable feasts,
Cringing from humanity’s jeers.

Very few humans treated him kindly;
Most met him with rocks and stones.
The only one to treat him kindly,
Was a Harper wandering all alone.

The harper pitied wild Chimera,
Walked with him for the next half-Turn.
Then, when the harper tried to civilize Chimera,
He escaped into the woods of Pern.

Chimera wanders there,
Wild and free,
Waiting for a human willing to share,
Waiting for a human willing to see,
The advantages of Chimera’s world.
