Martan nodded politely to Ayalana, the distant look in his eyes mirrored in his small smile. But it was understandable that he wasn’t as friendly as another man would be, wasn’t it? After all, he was surrounded by young people who each had something he didn’t…wouldn’t have, again. But he was still a brown-rider in both rank and privilege, and he was accorded even more respect now. And rank and privilege gave you certain pieces of knowledge.

“I spoke with Rinali – the retired Weyrwoman – a while ago, and she told me that there were three greens, a brown, and five blues.” He told them, in answer to M’telle’s speculation. “Good thing too – we need more in this Weyr.”

Nodding his head at L’geri’s question, Martan doesn’t mention that it wasn’t really that he couldn’t train Sarri when he got her, but that he was incapable of it. The two, as he saw them, had subtle differences – one being that his sanity had been dangerously slipping when he got her, and training didn’t occur to him. “It’s little things – not giving them food for a while if they’re bad, and making sure they understand what is right and what is wrong. Like you would do for a child.”

A small flicker of amusement flared in Martan’s eyes as he saw how uncomfortable the young rider’s question seemed to make him feel. With no wish to make L’geri any more uncomfortable he ignored the distress of the weyrling, remembering his old days in a different Weyr.

“It’s strict because it has to be, I suppose.” He said in his usual quiet way. “Dragonriding is hard – you can have dreadful accidents even in the lessons, not compared to what can happen…” He winced, unable to stop himself, his eyes closing in a brief moment of pain. “…In Threadfall.” He blinked away the memory, shaking his head. He should talk about something else. “I…ah…sorry.”

“Going between is very dangerous, because you need an exact image of the place you are going to. If you lessons are strict and hard, it’s because they have to be. The only way you can fight Thread is by being drilled in it over and over again.”
