I can see now how difficult I was for my mother to handle, and although it was SO humiliating to be punished in that way I can understand now why she did it. I dreaded her words "I think it's time for you to have your nappies on", as if it were the most natural thing in the world for a boy of my age to be stripped naked, usually either downstairs in the living room or upstairs in my mother's bedroom, put across her lap for a spanking, and then be put into the nappies and baby knickers that my little sister would by then have fetched for me. I'd have to stay in my nappies and baby knickers until Mum decided I'd learned my lesson. Often that wouldn't be until the following morning. I'd beg Mum not to make me wet my nappy, but she'd never let me use the toilet when I had my nappy on. My sister would tease me mercilessly when she knew I'd set myself.
