I was only out in public as long as it took to walk either to the next door neighbor's house or to my Aunt's house which was on the other side. The yards adjoined, so I didn't have to go far and believe me, I went quickly! That was simple male vanity, since both my aunt and the neighbor, Anna Marie had me in their houses and I played with both my cousin and the two neighbor girls, so my being femmed was no secret. In Mom's absence, both ladies were obeyed as if they were my mother with punishments etc. when I misbehaved. In those days, the women ruled the neighborhood and were home all day, while my Dad and the other men worked rotating shifts in the local steel mill.
