VHA Inc. and community hospitals across the country today announced a national call for entries for “The Face of Stroke” creative contest, to raise awareness of the third leading cause of death and encourage those affected by stroke to express the impact of this deadly, yet preventable, disease on their lives.
The contest kicks off National Stroke Month and encourages people affected by stroke to create a literary work (poem, short story, etc.), artwork, photograph, song or other creative piece that depicts how stroke has personally affected them. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries with $500 for Best in Show, $250 for second place and $100 for third place. Entries will also be posted to “The Face of Stroke” gallery on the StrokeSense Web site at www.strokesense.org.

“Stroke affects people from every walk of life,” said Scott Dahl, director, clinical affairs. “The Face of Stroke contest seeks to put a face of the wide range of people affected by this disease. From survivors to caregivers to families, this disease is not just devastating to the patient, but also can be devastating to the lives of those around them.”

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and claims more that 700,000 lives each year. Every 3.1 minutes a person will die of a stroke and a stroke can occur to anyone at any age. A majority of strokes can be prevented or delayed through proper management or elimination of risk factors, such as smoking and high blood pressure.

To combat this deadly, yet highly preventable disease, VHA, based in Irving, Texas, announced the national launch of StrokeSense. StrokeSense is a nationwide initiative to raise awareness of stroke and educate doctors and clinicians on best practices to continually improve clinical outcomes of stroke patients. This hospital-based program not only raises community awareness, but it is unique in that it provides clinical training to participating hospitals in VHA’s network of 2,200 not-for-profit health care organizations.

“The devastating effects of stroke take on many forms as stroke is the leading cause of long-term adult disability,” said Dahl. “This contest will allow families and stroke survivors to demonstrate how stroke has affected their lives in a creative way.”

The contest runs through National Stroke Month and to be eligible for the prizes, entries must be received by June 13, 2003. Additional submissions will be accepted on an ongoing basis and will be included in “The Face of Stroke” gallery. Entries can be entered at their local participating hospital or by sending it to VHA, 220 Las Colinas Blvd, Irving, TX 75039 or via e-mail at vhacustomerservice@vha.com. Contestants should send a cover letter with their name, phone number and signature verifying originality of the piece.

I took a peek at www.frogprintz.com about a month ago. The glowing recommendations I've read about this website intrigued me. I must say that I agree. I love the little story books (flip albums), that Michael Young creates. His use of photography and artistic illustration is wonderful. I ordered the CD that he sells on his website. It is so sentimental, funny and unique. Very romantic gift idea if you want to touch someones heart. I too highly recommend that you buy this as a gift.

Wedding Photography newcomer -- Melissa Boyle, 13:58:09 06/30/03 Mon
I am just starting out in an attempt to work on my own as a wedding and portrait photographer. I would really love wedding photography as my main focus. My question is, how do I build my business (getting clients) with little to no money to spend on advertisement? I can't afford to put an ad in a newspaper just yet and I am working on a website though the cost of promoting it is not a possibility right now. I have never shot a wedding though I have 2 weddings booked (by friend of a friend) in August. I am doing it really cheap for both couples due to the circumstances.
Any advice you could offer would be appreciated. I have only some portrait photography experience at this point and do not have a wedding portfolio to show potential customers. I don't want to mislead them but I don't want them to be frightened away by my not having any. What do you suggest?

Une question se pose : cet annuaire référence moins de 1.000 photographes sur plus de 100.000 pros officiellement enregistrés en France (chiffre à vérifier). Certains considèrent LE BOOK comme la bible de la photo (sont listés cette année : Paolo Roversi, Nick Knight, Sarah Moon, Donna Trope, Bettina Rheims, Patrick Demarchelier, Gilles Bensimon, Dominique Isserman, Christian d'Hoir...). Selon vous LE BOOK est-il une référence incontestable ?
