When I first got married, we were at a dinner party hosted by my wife's oldest sister. I was enjoying a drink at the kitchen bar while conversing with my brother-in-law as my wife Lynn and her sister Karen worked on food preparation.

Our nephew Steven, 8 at the time, snuck into the kitchen, and promptly stuck his finger in a mixing bowl. Karen immediately smacked his hand, which caused the bowl to tip and spill some of the cake batter in it - fortunately, Lynn caught it before more spilled.

Karen was upset and reminded Steven he had been told to stay out of the kitchen. Without further warning, she told the boy to bend over and grab the kitchen counter, which red faced he did, and then she quickly reached around and unfastened his jeans and lowered them along with his underwear. With her hand she gave him about 10 quick hard smacks to his bare bottom and then she told to pull his pants up and get out of the kitchen - he ran out fighting back tears.

That evening, my wife and I discussed our childhood discipline for the first time. Like me, she had grown up with spanking and believed in it.
