Black Magic, Smoke Magic (Psychop Rex) - A Review

Part One - The Author

The author became active recently and has posted some of their work to the Smoking Fetish Kingdom website.

Part Two - Black Magic, Smoke Magic

For April Hendrick's the Possible Club was an introduction into a whole new world and way of being. When a threat emerges, she must mobilise her friends to deal with it and in the process learn more about the world than she ever imagined possible.

Part Three - Comments

All smoking fetish stories are fantasy stories, but the genre known as 'Urban Fantasy' was only really explored in any depth by both An04 who wrote several stories featuring ghosts, vampires and magic during their career(1) and Mac001, who also looked into plotlines involving artifacts and magic.(2) This story is firmly within that genre, featuring as it does magic and fated destinies.

The author does a good job in building up the characters and the world in which they exist. The threat in the story which the protagonists must overcome is a truly vile one, but it comes from an unexpected source, a smoker with a troubled relationship to the habit, rather than a pure anti-smoker. The means by which it is overcome expands the setting in some quite interesting directions. More importantly it sets up questions, for example just what was it that was behind the villain, that may be explored in future episodes of the series if they are written.

One mystery is why the story was deleted from the Smoking Fetish Kingdom website shortly before it was published. This may be due to the way in which the villain casts their spell. I find this odd given some of the grotesque things I've encountered while looking through the archived fiction on the old Dark Side Board.

Overall this is a very strong story and well worth reading.

Notes

1. An4's second story 'The Cameo' and it's sequel 'Under Her Wing' explored the idea of magical artifacts that helped people become smokers, and the conspiracy that seeks to control them for anti-smoking ends. The story 'Charcoal' sees a self-proclaimed Black Witch use the art of poppetry to convert her father and step-mother into smokers. Perhaps inspired by 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer', the 'Hunting Vampires' series ('Hunting Vampires', 'Four Smokers Of The Apocalypse', Trinity', 'Gatekeepers'(Story is incomplete.), 'Necropolis' & 'It's Been A While' (Story is incomplete.)) and several stand alone stories ('Another Cold Day', 'Charisma' (Comprises 'Crypts' & 'Disclosure' Story is incomplete.) 'Bitter' & 'On Your Back' (Story is incomplete.)) featured vampires and vampire hunters of various kinds. Ghosts were a feature of 'Helen' (Comprises 'The Downward Spiral', 'Bound', 'Closer', 'Down On It', and 'Burn' Possibly incomplete.) & 'Directions' . All of these stories can be found in the 'Anthology of An4' series in the Noble Leaf Library, while reviews can be found in the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review series. As to the author, while they could and did come up with good ideas, they lacked the discipline to make good use of them. Authors looking for ideas to exploit could profit greatly by looking through An4s stories.
2. Mac001's stories 'Posession Game' sees the use of a magical artifact to create smokers. The 'Back Fire' series ('Back Fire', 'Back Fire 2', 'Back Fire 3: Patty's Revenge', 'Back Fire 4: The Party', 'Back Fire 4.5: Cindy's Mom' & 'Back Fire 5: The Final Back Fire') deal with the unexpected consequences of an attempt to use magic to get someone to stop smoking. These stories can be found in the first volume of the 'Treasury of Mac001' series in the Noble Leaf Libary. A review of 'Possession Game' can be found in volume 12 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review series.
