Sarah - Dark Allure (MicGio) - A Review
Part One - The Author
MicGio is an author this reviewer first heard about from another smoking fetish author, Bazzle, who mentioned that they were working on a rewrite of Fuzzyman's story 'But I Don't Smoke'. That rewrite has subsequently appeared in the Noble Leaf Library volume entitled 'Dear Diary', however my first firect encounter with the author's fiction was another story entitled 'My Addiction Diary - Isabelle's Diary' which appeared in the Noble Leaf Library volume entitled 'The Addiction Diaries' combined with Hubercito's 'My Addiction Diary' alonside which it had been written.(1)
Part Two - Sarah - Dark Allure
For Sarah Johanson, the decision to try smoking was hard, admitting that she tried was even harder...
Part Three - Comments
The story is a classic 'start smoking' narrative and as such is based on the clash between head and heart.(2) This is shown in the stories opening chapters by two characters, the protagonist Sarah and her mother, Carla.
Carla, like Michelle in An02's 'The Girls of Lakewood'(3) and Kelli in SStoryman's 'Turkish Delight'(4) begins as a smoker with a troubled relationship with the habit. Her trajectory in the story is one of abandoning the habit and then resuming it with a much changed 'post-quitting' attitude.(5)
This seqence of events has a profound effect on the protagonist, who's strong curiousity about smoking is unbeknownst to her the indication of a latent smoking fetish(6). She constructs a worst case scenario in her head that causes her to conduct her experimentation with extreme caution and secrecy, telling no one what she is doing, not her mother, not Julia, her best friend and a smoker since age 13(7) and definitely not Lance, the smoking boyfriend she picks up in chapter fifteen.
The generates suspense as to when and how Sarah will reveal herself a smoker. This moment comes in the penultimate chapter and the quadripartite final chapter explores what the revelation means from the part of the four major characters.
While the story shows that the author is still working through their models(8), they have successfully reworked them into something new. By making the story as much about the protagonists fears of getting caught and how that drives her development as a smoker as about the smoking itself the author avoids the predictability trap. The penultimate chapter works effectively to relieve the tension built up over the rest of the story, release, both for the reader and the protagonist comes at the moment her nic-fit fuelled anger at the teasing from mother and best friend about her not smoking breaks through the barrier of fear about admitting she does smoke.
The deliberate anti-climax that follows is foreshadowed in chapter twelve, where the aftermath of Julia's coming out as a smoker to her parents shows that the event does not have to result in parental rejection.
The ending of the story brings everything together leading to one strong thread pointing to a possible next story invoving Sarah and her friends in college.
While there are some editing glitches including a number of split paragraphs these do not affect the story, but will hopefully be corrected in future editions.
In conclusion this reviewer has no hesitation in recommending the story and wishes the author luck in their future endeavours.

2. I'm using this well worn phrase to refer to the conflict in any smokers mind between the knowledge of what smoking does to the body ('Head') and the pleasure gained by smoking ('Heart').

5. While it's clear that the 'heart' has defeated the 'head' once Carla has resumed smoking, her reference to her preferred cigarettes as both "...wonderful..." and "...devilish..." in successive paragraphs of Chapter 19 suggest that the internal war is not completely over.
6. This appears to be triggered by her own and her boyfriends smoking and is at least at the 'turns me on' level. There are also hints it may be the most extreme form of the Dark Side Fetish, namely a female smoker whose arousal is triggered not so much by her smoking, but what they imagine the smoking is doing to their insides.
7. This calculation is based on the assumption that the two characters at start are at age 17, which would mean that Julia started experimenting around age 13 as the remark the character first "...pulled out a
cigarette from her bag four years ago.", states in the chapter one. Similarly it is assumed that the story is set somewhere between the mid 1970s and late 1980s due to the complete lack of reference to the internet and social media, both items that came into existence in the mid 1990s.
8. All their previous fiction has been directly based off others works, this is, to my knowledge, their first original work.
