Smoking Permitted (BBannon) - A Review

Part One - The Author

Little is known about the author other than they were a 'Post-Loring' author active on Reddit.

Part Two - Smoking Permitted

The universe the story was set in was a 'high concept' smoking permissive environment which like the environments in Chain Dragon's 'Smoker's Paradise' series(2) and Academic Fun 5674's 'Jess's Last Run'(3) was one that could be simply expressed.(1) The authors stated intent was to write a series of 'snapshots' showing different aspects of the setting. Ultimately only three, seemingly focussing on members of the same unidentified family(4) were published on Reddit and eventually republished in volume 119 of the Noble Leaf Library.

Part Three - Comments

The three 'snapshots' that make up the story ultimately resolve to two static 'slice of a smokers life' stories and a third boils down to someone's employer threating to fire her for a good reason unless she has sex with them. The first two stories are of a kind that don't grab me and the third is repulsive.

The best smoking fetish fiction involves some degree of change, in 'How Could She Say No?'(5) by SStoryman, the protagonist, changes from anti-smoker to smoker, a change driven initially by anger at poor treatment, sustained by the friendships she picks up in the smoking community and confirmed by the actions of her step-daughter. Similarly this is what AZ-Man's 'Pygmalion'(6) is about, not simply the change from non-smoker to smoker, which is the change the protagonist undergoes, but the change from ignorance to understanding which is the journey undertaken by the individual responsible for the protagonists transformation.

This can also be seen in 'Jess's Last Run', you have the contrasting friends, Ray, who smokes the least and exercises most. Jess, who smokes the most and exercises the least and Amy who of course sits in the middle of those extremes. While the events of the run act to confirm Jesse's beliefs regarding smoking and exercise, they do cause Amy to question her beliefs, but it does not take much for Jess to persuade her otherwise. It is for Ray that the most interesting transformation is reserved, her actions and remarks at the end of the run suggest she's about to transition from social to steady smoking, with consequences to her love of exercise that are unexplored at that stories conclusion.(7)

The first two 'snapshots', lack any real sense of change. The protagonists are, at stories end, as they were at the start. As for the third 'Snapshot', as noted above, the scene of an employer extorting sex(8) from an employee in exchange for not firing them for an act of gross carelessness that could have resulted in multiple deaths is morally repugnant.

In short, this is another case of an author having a good idea, but their execution of it left much to be desired.

Not recommended as fiction, but the basic concept could serve as the basis for future exploration.

Notes:

1. "The setting is Britain in 2021 with one exception - in this universe no one ever discovered that smoking was dangerous."
2. The stories can be found in Vols. 33 and 34 of the Noble Leaf Library, the review of the story is in Vol. 30 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
3. The story can be found in Vol. 147 of the Noble Leaf Library, the review of the story is in Vol. 30 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
4. The family's surname is not given in any of the three stories, but the third story makes it quite clear that the protagonist of that story is the mother of the protagonists in the previous stories.
5. The story can be found in the NLL volume 'How Could She Say No & Converted', the review of the story is in Vol. 22 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
6. The story can be found in the 'Anthology of AZ-Man' in the Noble Leaf Library, the review of the story is in Vol. 26 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
7. This is something that Academic Fun 5674 may wish to explore in a future story.
8. This is also why having the plot of 'Mika's Journey Begins' revolve around someone exploiting a smokers Need-to-smoke as a means to extort sex from them provoked such condemnation. A review of the story can be found in Vol. 26 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
