When In Smokersville (Kaitlyn Bringhurst) - A Review

Part One - The Author

The author is one who was active on Amazon between November of 2012 and September of 2016 and published fiction dealing with a number of fetishes, the majority of which seem to be smoking fetish stories. To quote their Amazon biography:

"I'm hopelessly addicted to writing. My works vary and are generally considered speculative fiction. I enjoy mixing genres, thus you will often see elements of romance, time-travel, historical themes, erotica, thriller, horror, supernatural and paranormal, drama, humor, and more in my writing--really anything I think I can pull off!..."

This same bio also notes that the author has an obsession "...with the Victorian era, along with the early decades of the twentieth century, you'll often see a nod to Victorian times or "the Jazz Age" in my works because it is so much a part of my life."

Part Two - When In Smokersville

This story published via Amazon in 2016 was the authors penultimate story before ceasing writing. For Sherri the job was an opportunity of a lifetime, but there was one thing about the town she was moving to she had not fully understood, something that she would have to make a major decision about when she got there.

Part Three - Comments

At it's simplest level the story is of the 'Surrounded' type, with a non-smoker joining a group of smokers and eventually taking up the habit as a consequence. What's of interest here is that it's a town scale group of smokers in what amounts to a smoking 'Shangri-la', something that author MentholMan would later feature in his second and last story 'The Holdout'(1). More realistic takes on this concept appear in Richard Ralls 'Nevermore'(2)(3) and BlackLungLovers 'North and South'(4)(5).

While some authors did try to provide explanations for how the locations ended up the way they have, in this case the author does not. While not necessarily a problem for what I suspect was intended as a humorous story, even if the humor is not to this reviewers taste, it would have been a problem in a more serious story.

As with several other stories I've reviewed, it's an interesting idea, but I don't think the author did the best they could with it.

Not recommended.

Notes:

1. The story can be found in Vol. 96 of the Noble Leaf Library.
2. The novel is available in hard copy via Amazon. A review can be found in Vol. 29 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
3. Named Denshire in the novel. The town is not covered in any detail in 'Nevermore', it's speculated that the planned sequel to 'Nevermore' to have been entitled 'Sundown' would have gone into more detail about the settlement and it's history had the novel been written.
4. The story can be found in Vol. 1 of 'The Treasury of BlackLungLover', part of the Noble Leaf Library. A review can be found in Vol. 11 of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
5. While not named in the story, the author presents a surprisingly realistic view of the town, with the smoking permissive environment being sustained by the fact the local economy is dependant on tobacco farms.
